Wil Wheaton on the death of the arcade

Feb 10th 2007 1:14PM (Joystiq)
#43, I hear what you're saying and it breaks my heart. I thought I might have been the only one thinking it, but yeah, we've definitely lost a lot of our innocence. The early '80s were wonderfully simple and enjoyably sociable times. The arcade was where it was at. God, I sometimes long for those days. I remember having seen some HUGE arcades. Every game you could think of from pac-man to dragon's lair. Good times. They're very much missed.

#10, I think you hit it on the nail for me. Anytime I discover a new arcade, it's mostly barren. Then I discover that the games actually worth looking at cost me $1.00 to $2.00 per play. I know that when I step up to one, it'll take me at least $4-8 just to warm up to it before I'm good enough to want to play more and even then, the gameplay doesn't last for long. It's just not worth it.

I have 26 DS games and counting. Yup, I'm a DS whore and lovin' it. :)

Wow, everywhere I go on the internets today, Sony keeps shooting themselves in the foot. Before you know it, they'll be walking on stilts.

Man...it's kinda sad to see Sony and its fanbase try so hard to get noticed. It's really too bad that Sony doesn't stop whining and start making games that I'd actually consider looking at.

I saw 20 copies at Best Buy just yesterday. I passed on it. I don't think they'll be selling out anytime soon.

Games shipping this week

Fuzz, I bought Freedom Wings and I'm enjoying it thoroughly. It took some getting used to while flying in manual mode, but once I got the hang of the controls, it's been good times. I'm guessing this game is what Top Gun should have been on the DS, though I've never played that particular game.

I'm rather liking the RPG elements of this game. It really makes it. The game requires a lot of patience at first, but once you get into it, you realize that it's a fairly well balanced game with some minor flaws.

Could use a more fleshed-out story, but I'm not complaining at $15.00 (after my coupon). :)

The point is, portables are meant to get damaged. you put it in your pocket, you open the thing like ten times a day, it bounces around as you walk, and so forth ...you all still haven't made it to winter and are crying like little babies!

That has got to be the most uneducated, downright retarded statement I've seen in just a few minutes (the internets are full of them after all).

JRM, you really believe that a portable game system that is well taken care of should crack after just a couple of weeks of ownership?

Stop being dumb for the sake of humanity. Quit being another online embarrassment.
