Japanese gamers split on subtitles vs. dubs for Western games

Feb 22nd 2010 2:05PM (Joystiq)
I don't mind dubbing when it's done properly, but the melodramatic readings in Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey stick out in my mind as terrible, occasionally even painful.

'Chaos Rising' in Dawn of War II on March 11

"In the service of the Emperor?" Wouldn't the Chaos Campaign be in service against the Emperor? Or do we start pre-Heresy?

New Just Cause 2 trailers dissect the 'Anatomy of a Stunt'

Just Cause 1 is an exercise in frustration. The visuals are amazing for a title released six months into the 360's lifecycle. There are a number of side missions which you cannot complete because of bugs, but if you work around them you can still get 100% game completion. There are also times when I would get shot down or have a vehicle explode while off the beaten path and it would take forever to find another vehicle. I felt cheated out of my $50 new, but used for less than $10 it's worth picking up.

Xbox Live Marketplace Feb. schedule includes $10 Battlefield 1943 [update]

$10 is a small price to pay for bailing out over an enemy carrier and stealing a plane off their deck.

Producers: Final Fantasy XIII will 'resurrect' Japanese game industry

Call of Duty? The games I want Square Enix to look at are Fallout, Dragon Age and Mass Effect. My problem with JRPGs in the post- Xenogears and FF9 era are linear gamepaths, fantasy tropes driven into the ground, and abysmal voice acting.

Amazon deal: Mad Catz Street Fighter IV Tournament FightStick for $99

I'm curious - those of you who have purchased arcade controllers for any of the consoles, have you been happy with them? I'm not big into fighting games, but when I ran my local evil corporate video game retail outlet, most of the handful we sold were returned as defective. I'm sure a couple of those were people not understanding how to use it, or my former company making a mess of things as they are wont to do. But I was always intrigued to know if they were worth the investment.

New Years Eve Only: 50% off Battlefield 1943 [update]

Does this come with 50% fewer people taking off with all the landing craft before everyone gets a chance to board?

You know who you are. Jerks.

Just Cause 2 visits small island, kills everyone

Phix, it's worth picking up, as I believe it's $8 in the used bin. I will temper Shadowbender's enthusiasm, though, with my disappointment with a number of game features. A number of side missions can not be completed. Any mission involving an oil rig involves a bug where you fall through the rig and you get kicked off the ladder leading to the platform you're supposed to blow up. A similar side mission in larger cities involves you trying to demolish a building which has no collision detection.

These bugs make the game incredibly frustrating, though it is still possible to get 100% game completion (you simply walk/drive/fly away from the guy who offers you the uncompletable mission and return to receive a different side quest). I felt cheated out of my $50 when the game was first released on 360 in the summer of 2006, but was still able to salvage a decent experience from the game as a whole.
