Take a closer look at the Wii U's crazy controller

Jun 7th 2011 9:45PM (Joystiq)
@Shockwave It looks slightly nicer than a "Ben Heck" project. i trust Nintendo to make nice portable hardware - which I consider this a strange subset of, but it still comes off as awkward.

Billy Mitchell opens 'King of Kong' arcade at Orlando airport

@Mr Bungo - Ever enter a contest and read the small print, and see that part where it says you grant permission to use your name or likeness in promotional materials? If Billy and Steve had similar clauses in their movie contracts, that would have bundled all of that into a package that Billy could have licensed from the owners of the film. That's the "cleanest" way to get all this rolling, but there are any number of ways that this could have been legally structured. But each person, and the movie would have a right that would have to be squared away.

@ Superwoody - The lack of a trademark on the term "Kong" squares away any trademark claims with the Donkey Kong franchise, but they also have large donkey kong wall graphics in their store. That can have copyright and trade dress implications related to DK.

Buy Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded at GameStop or Amazon, get puffy stickers

How do you pronounce the name of "Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days", and what does it mean? Can I save time and refer to it as "Kingdom Hearts 179 Days"?

Nintendo requests 'It's on like Donkey Kong' trademark

@aristokrat Those aren't requirements for a trademark. I think you are confusing certain aspects of both patent and copyright law, neither of which apply to a TM.

Blizzard bans over 5,000 StarCraft 2 cheaters

@oJMan240o While not having a computer is certainly a hard barrier to Starcraft II, the system requirements are surprisingly low for a brand new title. My 3.5+ year old laptop plays it just fine, although pretty much every bell and whistle must be turned off. It doesn't take much computer at all to run.

Dragon Age: Origins Awakening now available on Mac

Man, DA:O kind of kicked my butt. I don't know what I was doing wrong, but I just sort of died all over the place while spamming powers and trying to lock shit down with my AoEs. Tanks weren't tough enough to tank, rangers didn't deal enough damage, and my mage/buffer didn't buff/debuff enough. Maybe I just picked every bad skill in the game, but the lack of in-game power stats makes that kind of easy to do.

Conversely, I made the mistake of running a pure biotic in ME2, and that game was just WAY too easy. Once you get a couple damage upgrades, and you start taking things out just by looking at them funny. When you can solo kill collector mini bosses without expending ammo, that's just imba.

LGJ: Where's my refund?

Aug 31st 2010 7:30PM (Joystiq)
(Disclaimer - I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice).

I'm currently studying consumer protection, and one interesting note we learned regarding the FTC is that most statutes and regulations from the FTC are not actionable by private citizens. However, some statutes such as the CLRA include that any "unlawful activity" is actionable under that protection statute, thus providing consumers with an avenue for private action when the activities of a merchant violates, for instance, an FTC regulation.

In other words, it's entirely possible for the FTC to enact regulations covering products such as DLC without providing consumers a practical remedy at law.

Light up your day with the first Torchlight 2 trailer

Aug 19th 2010 12:01PM (Joystiq)
@Lounge Gremlin The game is relatively short I hear, like 12-15 hours. So, if you can score a good deal on 1, like the $5 sales they have for it on steam, you could easily play through it a couple times before 2 comes out.

Apple to give away free cases to iPhone 4 users

Jul 16th 2010 4:05PM (Engadget)
@aubreyq Same here with my iPhone 4 and no case. *Shrug* I might as well get my free case, but I'm not entirely sure what to do with it.

Dell Streak's supposed US packaging is gorgeous, unboxed with elegance

@Andread It's also ripping off the Aliph Jawbone packaging a super lot.
