PSA: Hunger Games: Girl on Fire out today

Mar 23rd 2012 10:30AM (Joystiq)
@Prince David that said... the assets are already produced, the engine looks relatively simple... the port wouldn't be all that difficult from appearance.

Maybe its because I've always programmed, and dreaded dealing with UI that it seems like the hardest parts are already done... and reprogramming the same thing is pretty easy when the scope is defined.

@Derp Sandwich infinity upvotes here...

we don't allow this degree of infringement on IP in other fields, why is software, and particularly gaming so different? And why mobile gaming even moreso? is it because of the scale of the market... so many small games released constantly to manage? The managing bodies of the distribution systems need to be held accountable, they are responsible to protect their devs, and shouldn't be profiting from infringements.

@Labreya I agree, it just fails to evoke the sense of terribleness ... seeing as it has become a social norm to pirate media in all forms for personal use. This is worse because its piracy for gain... also worse because of the relative scale of stealing from an indie group vs stealing from 'the man'...

similarly code plagiarism doesn't seem evil enough...

@JasonA the problem with the metacritic rating is that it is variable... sure it should stabilize with time as it is unlikely that any new reviews are coming out... but should I make a new reviewing website, give it 10/10, then convince metacritic to accept the score... that could bump it over 85, then say someone else reviews it as 7/10 etc... I guess the agreement must have specified a specific date? They wouldn't have made it just a threshold (get over 85 once sort of deal), because an early 9 or 10 could have cost them big money... whereas with sales the numbers only go one direction and a threshold makes sense on so many levels...

@shibbyo thats how I took it too... indie as in the root of the term, independent, not as in the things we associate with being independent such as small size, no past experience etc... and not as in the genre that indie has become in most media forms (such as 'indie music').

@Rirath

definitely!

I would much rather give my pre-order dollars to the developer, who can use that money to improve the game, judge interest etc etc... instead of giving it to gamestop/whatnot... where they can use the money to... invest and make more money?

@TheDarkWayne when you launch an app, depending on the app, it can launch into a windows 7 style desktop, or a metro style app. On touch devices there will be a greater focus on metro style experience, as it suits the input... but on desktop style input (keyboard and mouse) it will be more retro...

The important take home is not that it will limit you to one or the other... but that there will be unity between tablets and laptop... allowing for more unified development and user experience. Instead of the stupidity we have today where tablets are more like large phones than small computers.

@soorma he was just defending the first poster who said kick starter was one of the best things, not that it was THE best thing. Which is to say that they might feel kick starter is in the top 100 things of our time, leaving plenty of room for other things like the internet, cellphones ,etc...

Me personally, while I agree that kick starter is awesome, I don't think it comes close to a number of other things that have happened on the past 25 years in the tech field... but at the end of the day I think I'm looking into his comment too much, just like the first reply... lets just appreciate kickstarter for what it is, a unique and fantastic web service.
