Here in the Providence RI/Boston MA area,I've had about four chances to buy a PS3 now:
(1)My local Target had one sitting in a case in full view of everyone 3 days before Xmas.
(2)The Gamestop where I shop at had a 60 GB one last Saturday that sat unsold for most of the day.
(3)Some guy at a local flea market had 2 60GB for sale.He wanted $1000,or $900 cash in hand for one.I told him that for me it wasn't worth $600,never mind the larger amounts.
(4)The preorders for the PS3/Wii on both ebay & my local craiglists. If you have noticed, the PS3 was selling for well over $1000 prerelease, while the Wii,at least locally, didn't get a lot of interest.Since both systems came out, people have been clamoring for a Wii (which I can tell you,I've had many non-gamers become enamored with the fun system)...
...while the PS3 is barely selling above retail locally.
IMHO,Sony has had 3 bad launches now.The PS2 didn't launch that well - having mostly mediocre games then (anyone remember Fantavision?) but Sega had shot itself too many times in the foot for the DC to take hold. The PS2 didn't really take off here in the USA until GTA3 came out. What if it had come out for the Xbox at the same time? Think about it...
No one,but NO ONE,has bested Nintendo in the handheld arena. My PSP sits unused in my household.Local stores this holiday season had plenty of PSP's,yet were all sold out of DS's.Is it a viable platform? Yes. But it will never hold the market lead.
Onward to the PS3.Another mediocre launch. IMHO,there is only game to get now,& that would be Resistance.Nothing else out there is a must have,or is available on the 360.The thing can't display games in HD on all HDTV's (this is the deal breaker for me).It can play Hi-Def Blu-Ray discs, but so what?
Not many people want to be involved in a format war.History has shown that the better tech doesn't always win out.Just look at Betamax/VHS. The only reason that the PS3 sold out initially here in NA is the scalpers.(again,IMO)
Sony is being EXTREMELY arrogant when it comes to the PS3.Nothing else will succeed, according to them.Except that I've been gaming for a long time, and there have been others who had a dominating lead when it came to gaming. You might have heard of them - Atari & Nintendo. Both had the brand awareness & the coolness factor,& both didn't change with the times.Besides the last gaming system that was so expensive & was supposed to be "everything" was the 3DO.Raise your hands if you remember that...
The only reason why the PS3 won't be a complete failure #20 has already stated:The Japanese factor.(remember though, the PS3 did have a price drop there already) The 360 has made a tiny bit of progress there with the release of Blue Dragon, but it will never be big over there.
Here in the US,though - unless Sony can get an exclusive game that can appeal to the masses,in conjunction with at least a $200 price drop...then they will not rule the roost this go around.
