Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending January 20th, 2008

Jan 26th 2008 12:10AM (Engadget HD)
Come on Truthteller and othere delusional people...do yourself a favor and travel !!!

i still did not buy any HDM because of this stupid war. I have a ps3 and a 360 ( without hddvd )but did not feel like choosing a camp before the end of the war. But this day has come.

Blu is a clear winner for some reason:

bluray hold 64% "to date" market share in america...big deal, it is not the only market
but it is 90% in asia ( in japan blu disc are dirt sheap ) 70%in china ! YES in china, supposed to be the exit way for cheap hd player....and yes i know that not from studies or graph, but from all my travels, were almost no HDdvd movies could be found in beijing shanghai hongkong, or canton. And my home, europe, its turmins to be almost 80% now.

Were i leave, in thailand, land of copies and pirates....Blu are dominating the sales of regular shops, even over DVDs now ( for the chrismas period ), because the price is right ( import dvd= 25$ import blu= 30$ or less ) and the hdtv are hot sales here ( almost no more sd tvs to be found.

The second point is the impact of warner announcement. The news talked about it, the mrewspapers, the teen internet sites, even the groceries clerks tlaked about it. In the mind of most of regular peoples, hddvd recieved a deadly hit. And nothing can reversed that now. It is percieved as a commun sens by general public ( maybe not in america, but in the rest of the world )

Third point, Universal and paramount. They would be suicidal to dont go blu now. They had great sells in US with films like transformers, but the same movie tanked in europe...in hddvd. When harry potter, and spiderman topped the charts in blu, in the old continent. Are they blind not to understand that ?
And when you see the importance of warner as a distributor in asia ( almost 50% of dreamworks and paramount films ) it is likely that paramount movies will be in blu here.

I would have had the same speech in favor of red camp, if the format had won the CES battle, but in this situation, toshiba should drop the towel, and the two remaining studios ( very big ones by the way ) should switch sides...europe and asia are lost forever, and those zone are selling ps3 like hotcakes now...

For truth teler, if sells are low...big deal, remember the numbers of dvd sold in 1995-97, the period when i bought my first pioneer dvd player in paris. Even smaller in us, and abslutely non existant in europe or asia. It took 5 full years to starts. So HDM are in a good way to replace dvds.

And for the downloadable contents, maybe some countries in europe and the us have a good bandwith, but in asia ( including japan ) the average joe are still on a 2-5 mbps connection....1go takes a night to download....good plan for the near futur. HDM all the way here .

That was my international point of view.

Analyst: PS3 dragging down Sony

Dec 29th 2006 11:59PM (Joystiq)
For my part, i think a wii domination would affect principally the good adventure games we had on the ps2. But it is not the WII fault, it is the cinsumers fault....i mean BEN compared it with reality tv, and it is the smartest thing i read for long time on a forum. It looks to me like the end of pure adventure games on the pc after quake dominated with the sims...Not that i dont enjoy the two others, but i can still play monkey island with all the pleasure behind, and i could not touch quake on y PDA. It was a sad time for PC, it will be a sad time for CONSOLE. When we see the sales of blue dragon in the land of RPG, what happend ??? IT is made by the maestro of manga, on a powerfull and cheap system, with all the love possible, and it doesnt sell. Sure there is the fact that it is an american console, and it does not help, but look at ff3 on DS, poor score for an FF, specialy regarding the number of DSlite in japan. And what about zelda WII or CUBE selling less than half the number of wii sport.
I think we are observing a turn ( major turn ) in the videogame industry, and the leadership of nintendo will show the end of a lot of things. Never forget that they lead in hardware sales but also 90% of the games sold on their machines are nintendo franchises, a bit scary for me. After the closure of CLOVER studio, we can already say goodbye to the brilliant OKAMI, and i would like to see a sequel to shadow of the colossus with the actual market....it would sales extremely poorly. Look at loccoroco, amazing little deep game, poor sales. SAD SAD SAD ( hopefully sony is doing a second one ). Where is ELEBIT in the charts ??? all those good strange games are selling so less than NSMB or ANIMAL CROSSING, that analyst consider them failures, and studio would not even give then one more chance ( capcom did not talk about doing another rockman zx on ds after the poor sales, but are doing the 4th episode of phoenix wright...)

Lets see the future, but i am in the same feeling as another poster, i might skip the entire generation, playing old games on ps2 that i never played, and sticking with some good productions on ds and psp, and wait until some brighter visions point at the horizon.

Japanese hardware sales, 17 July - 23 July: bad comparison week

Hi guys....
I just post my feeling at the moment...and its against the global mood on the net.
DS Lite is leading, thats a fact, and i have one, thats another fact. But let me tell you that i am enjoying it sooo much less that my psp. I had every gameboy out there except the original ds and the micro...and my feeling is that people that never had a GBA are now buying DS, thats it. I have no hard feeling against the DS, but it feels like the GBA big time. OKOK you gonna tell me all the functions are great like the stylus, but sorry, so far none of the special features games had convinced me...i am playing partners in time, wich is exactly similar to a gameboy game, and mario DS, Except some details, feels exactly like the N64 version...with a very lousy control.

And dont bring other names, i tested them all:
Castelvania, only better graphics...the magic thing, lousy
new super mario, excelent graphic for this support, but feels like already played
Warioware, so much less fun than the gba one, and finnished in an afternoon
and the list is long
Metroid, great feel, but damn its ugly...welcome back to quake one

I actualy dont understand this frenetic passion for the DSlite, i like it, but nothing more than my old gba ( RIP ). Maybe some games are coming, but so far i am almost forcing myself to finish one.

And YES, i am super happy to find back some games like valkyrie profile, or locoroco, and legend of heroes 2 on PSP, there are so much more amazing and deep.

Sorry to be that much of a kill joy, but this is my feeling...

Thanks for reading

Should we consider the PSP dead?

Jul 19th 2006 3:15PM (Joystiq)
I have both machines, a psp for a year, and a DS lite for a month. AND THE PSP IS FAR FROM DEAD....

Dont get me wrong, the ds lite has strong titles, but the one i bought it for, i finished them in 2 days average, and has no intention to touch them again...

The DS game are really appealing, and fun in the first minutes, but i really have to push myself to finnish one....besides nobody never get annoyed by the very rigid savegame style of most of games...( points, stars , savepoint really spred out ...) non portable at all.

In the side of the PSP, i found the games not attractive at all, in the first look, but once inside, the depth is far from the nintemdo system...And there is a lot of beloved RPG ( nintendo has non good one except the gba ones ... but sorry compare to the psp games, they are ugly ). I finnished not far from 15 games on PSP and they where all slow to come, but delectable to finnish, so dont say there is nothing good on it...depends on the taste.

So good point for both, i just see the wall against the PSP is the price of games or system...but sorry to say that to european people, in asia, where the price are similar between the DS lite, and the PSP, SONY is a clear winner from far...but the systems are not official except in japan, so they are not recorded in the statistic...

Thanks for reading, and long life NINTENDO, and SONY handhelds, they give me so much joy in the toilets....
