SCEE may lay off 10 percent of staff

Apr 17th 2007 10:34AM (Joystiq)
Probably hasn't anything to do with the losses, they laid off some people in 2004 too. Companies (even Nintendo and Microsoft before the fanboys come in) like to make a lot of profit. If you have too many people, you can't make a lot of profit so you lay off people who you see as 'useless'. It is called reorganisation.

Three Speech retracts PS3 BioShock, but not other release dates

Apr 8th 2007 5:06AM (Joystiq)
It is a timed exclusive or something like Assassin's Creed. Take Two (2K games) is losing a lot of money, they can't risk out on losing a part of their target audience. Aside from that, a PS3 version was announced at E3. Do you remember how Oblivion and GTA were announced as 360 exclusives? PS3 is getting Oblivion, GTA IV and just like the 360 exclusive content for that last one. (Take Two, Rockstar, 2K Games, Gathering, ... it is all the same company)

It is only since the Microsoft event X06 that Take Two spends entire days telling people it doesn't exist. Do you see Square-Enix or Konami reacting within the hour every time someone tells MGS4 or FFXIII are going to the 360? No, that is because they aren't planning it at the moment. Remember Ubisoft and Capcom? They made it quite clear Assassin's Creed and DMC4 were exclusives.

Analyst: DS could end up being the greatest of all-time

Mar 21st 2007 3:45PM (Joystiq)
Won't happen, Nintendo will kill of the DS before that happens. PS2 will reach at least 125 million (even the PS1 managed to sell another 10 million after the PS2 launch and it was only discontinued in 2005) and will stay on the market until 2010. So the DS needs to sell another 80 million before Nintendo pulls out the next handheld card. How long did the GBA last? It only lasted 4 years despite selling 75 million. The Color reached 45 million in three years before it was dumped.

Lord of the Rings Online team confident entering MMO market

Well, they have some interesting features and the limited edition lifespan subscription might lure a lot of LotR fans into the game. I attented their Benelux premiere of the game, and I found it very interesting. Too bad I can't run the game, otherwise I'd be playing a lot.

Today's most therapeutic video: Simpsons 'GTA Parody'

Actually, the game itself is a Mortal Kombat or any other fighter parody or something, only the title is a GTA parody.

PSP still hasn't reversed Nintendo's handheld dominance

Feb 27th 2007 2:33PM (Joystiq)
The PSP is the real GBA2, Nintendo fans should be grateful that Sony released the PSP. Nintendo was forced to take a radical change. (The DS was announced months after the PSP, without the PSP they would probably have released the GB Evolution) The competition also forced them to actually release new games unlike their GBA library.

Sony's trainwreck of a keynote [update 1]

Sony did what the keynotes are for, that is the problem.

Should we consider the PSP dead?

Jul 20th 2006 3:00AM (Joystiq)
Sony should learn from Nintendo's tripple whammy. Release the same handhelds three times and keep on repeating. Like GB-GB Light-GB Color and then GBA - GBA Sp (because yeah, we didn't have the technology for backlit back when the GBA was released) - GB Micro and now I'm waiting for the third DS. These are handhelds, not Pokémon, we don't gotta buy them all. But that is how Nintendo is making profits.

I wouldn't consider the PSP dead by a long shot, until June 2006 it was beating the DS and quickly gaining on its lead. Only the Lite launch boosted the DS sales. Should you blame Sony for Nintendo releasing the same handheld again and the Ninty fanboys that go buy it despite having a DS Phat. According to NPD btw the PSP has sold 4.711.961 copies, the DS 5.187.240. Not counting in the GBA sales, the PSP has done quite well. The same goes for the UK and even in Japan but not as good as the DS.

Now, we take a look at those shipping numbers. 15 million were shipped by the end of 2005, let's call that a good year since the launch. It took the PS2 TWO MONTHs longer to reach that number, and I think we can all assume the PS2 is the best-selling console ever? The PS took 2,5 years to reach the same number. The PSP is actually shipping faster than the two only consoles ever to reach 100 million. Now, call me stupid, but the shops don't stock up on things they can't sell.

It is true that there aren't many million sellers on the PSP, but that is rather due to the diversity on the games than the quality of the games. Think about it, the PS2 game Zone of the Enders never sold a million copies. The DS has 13 games which sold over a million, but I highly doubt that this means all the other games on the system are selling well. It is no coincidence that all those titles are Nintendo titles (except for Tamagotchi). People don't care about the rest. The DS has actually a poorer game library.

In reality, if we take a look at GameRankings the PSP has 22 games who reach 80% or higher at 20 reviews or more. (which doesn't include a whole number of multiplatform games and Loco Roco), the DS has 21 games (1 Konami, 1 Activision, 1 Capcom, 1 Sega, 1 Atlus, 1 Majesco and 16 Nintendo games) At a minimum of 10 reviews, the PSP has gained two more 80+ and the DS none. (Loco Roco and Race Driver 2006) This is not yet including Tales of Eternia and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, these only come to play at 5 reviews minimum because of their American releasedate. (Just Out/Not Out) The DS on the other hand still only has 21 games. (of which three are Nintendogs) So I wouldn't call the PSP library poor, it is just that the Nintendo titles are actually just more highly looked at by the fanboys.
