From Dust review: It's hard out here for a god

Jul 28th 2011 12:50AM (Joystiq)
am i the only one that thinks this game would be so much more awesome with kinect.

its the type of game i initially imagined when i saw kinect at all. gives that much more oomph to feeling like god. imagine raising your hand to create a mountain, or swiping to create a flood.

Greenberg: Kinect sales won't depend on review scores

Oct 30th 2010 2:55AM (Joystiq)
@Shadowbender

the problem with having soccer moms as a target is the per console games purchased ratio for kinect it will be an expected 2 or 3. in comparison, the 360 as a whole is over 12. in numbers for a company this means that the software sales will not make up for any hardware loss from kinect, whereas the games more than make up for the expense on the 360 (one billion dollars in profit from xbl and games). and thus they must make the hardware cheaper to manufacture or sell it at a higher price.

so when microsoft was targeting hardcore gamers (think natal) it was supposed to go for under 100 and do twice as much. as soon as they realized only casuals would buy it, they jacked the price AND took down the functionality, a financially viable decision for the company, a disaster for us joystiq-ers.

Rogers' budget-friendly chatr brand launches in Canada

Jul 28th 2010 10:51PM (Engadget)
@silencemuch

right now it goes:

bell-rogers-telus
fido-koodo-solo-virgin
wind-publicmobile-mobilicity-chatr.

in my expereince wind is still the best, rogers' main brand and fido sometimes give really good deals with their good phones if you call in customer support, but even then its nothing compared to what wind gives. also mobilicity's 65 dollar unlimited everything (including data) is pretty amazing.

the chatr plans seem really bad compared to wind and mobilicity, even their phones (although i understand you can bring your own GSM phones instead of just AWS for wind)

if it wasnt for the millions of marketing dollars they have, chatr would die before we know it.

Proximity sensor woes caused by reflective ear canal

Jul 8th 2010 1:18PM (TUAW.com)
the apple employee was wrong because he was confusing an IR led+camera system for a photosensitive resistor.

the problem is caused when the IR light goes INTO the ear canal and does not reflect back, and thus that void of the ear canal causes the sensor to believe there is a void everywhere, ie no face.

the apple employee said that the sensor instead picks up on darkness caused by your face being near it, and the problem occurs when light is bounced off your ear into the sensor, thus he told him to turn the lights off or the curtains closed.

obviously, if the apple employee is right, this is a ridiculous solution, telling someone to call in the dark. if the apple employee is wrong, well then, he's giving out wrong solutions. but someone here commented that going in the shade did indeed solve their problems while they were outside, so i am pretty curious myself.

regardless, the apple employee is right in saying that the location/programing of the sensor were changed, and thus the problem is being caused. it is wrong of Aron to criticize him at the level he is, without understanding the technological background behind the explanation.

RUSE to support Move, not planning to support Kinect

Jul 7th 2010 4:46PM (Joystiq)
@Ezio Auditore da Firenze

iuno, if the game combined voice with guestures and then also used a 360 controller at the same time, i could really see it being well done using kinect. we just have to try new things, step out of the paradigm.

really unexpected though, seeing as though they were going to launch for microsoft surface too.
