Yep, I've ripped a whole bunch of DVDs with Handbrake, like the first poster. All 8 virtual cores maxed out the entire time (averaged over 100 fps for each movie). The fans were barely audible at about 4,200 rpm and the CPU temp maxed out at about 88ºC, then settled down at around 86º. No problems at all.
I think the Firewall issue is more complicated than TUAW realizes. I have the same problem as the questioner; what seems to be happening is that the Advanced tab of the Firewall preferences just isn't working consistently. I get asked every single time on login to allow access for apps that are already listed as having permission to allow connections (including EyeConnect, Simplify Media, and others). In addition, apps that I've granted permission don't seem to keep permission - I often have to completely turn off the Firewall to allow EyeConnect to be visible as a media server on my other media playing devices and I have similar problems with my Canon remote scanning software. Yes, I've tried repairing permission and removing plist files and all the usual steps. There are scattered reports of similar problems in the Apple Support forums but no solutions. These problems all started around the time 10.6.1 came out.
I love Spaces but I have fought Word for years . . . that damnable floating Toolbox screws things up 80% of the time for me. Glad MS finally got it fixed, more or less. I DO wish Snow Leopard would stop screwing up Spaces access with my Logitech 4-button mouse. I have the keypress set correctly in preferences but it's just not working. In 10.5 when this happened rarely, I could log out and log back in and it would work again. In 10.6 I have to delete the appropriate .plist file in the system Library folder and then reset all my keyboard and mouse shortcuts. Sheesh. What a PITA. It's happened twice in the last 3 days.
Software Update kept giving me the option to download and install, but after clicking "Install" and entering my password, it would never actually shut down and install. I had to manually install both updates, which worked fine.
