Sensible World of Soccer has critical bug, gets pulled
Dec 19th 2007 10:30AM (Joystiq)Harsh.
But highly amusing.
Sensible World of Soccer coming to XBLA Dec. 19
Nov 28th 2007 5:12AM (Joystiq)It's as easy to play as the real thing. It's also nearly as difficult to really master as the real thing.
It's not a simulation, it just captures the essence of the sport. It's simplicity, flow and enjoyment. Moments of genius. Moments of pain. Moments of comedy.
You've got one button that does everything. Pass, Shoot, Head, Tackle. It's like the context sensitive 'A' button in Gears of War - except it works flawlessly.
I personally played the game from it's very first version through to SWOS 97/98. Then I kept playing it for over 5 years after. (SWOS is huge. It's career mode gives managerial abilities: buying and selling players, moving clubs, being a national coach etc - all set across dozens of nations, hundreds of leagues and thousands of teams and players)
Earlier in the year I had a bunch of mates around and we played the (comparatively poor) Mega Drive (Genesis) version of the original Sensible Soccer in a big league.
It plays as awesomely as ever. Even guys who hadn't played any games in 5-6 years gave as good as they got.
Anyone can play it, but it doesn't dumb anything down either.
I honestly can't say enough about the game.
It is still my favourite game of all time.

Clear up the Cricket confusion
Jul 28th 2006 5:23AM (Joystiq Xbox)It goes back to the original on the PSX I think.
At the time Brian Lara was playing county cricket in England and was setting world record scores every other week ,so it was a no brainer to put him on the game.
In Austraila at the time the game (i think ) was branded under fat aussie spinner Shane Warne's name...
I think they've just kept Lara for brand recognition - seeing as he's well past his prime.
Plus Andy 'Freddy' Flintoff has been snapped by EA for their crap criket game. So the only English cricketer with a proper household name has already gone.
Ricky Ponting is the Aussie captain and one of the most consitantly brilliant batsmen in recent times.

Sensible World of Soccer considered for XBLA
Jul 6th 2006 5:00AM (Joystiq)I played this game for something like five years after the last iteration was released - there are still thousands of people all over Europe that play it today.
It would definitely sell incredibly well here in the UK and Europe - absolutely no question - there's no need for an evaluation there.
I don't think you guys in the US will see the attraction - but if there is going to be a cheap footy game on XBLA then one of the best ever would be a good place to start.
