You guys should consider making resolution mandatory when you post monitor stats. It's kind of important.

Sony fakes Blu-ray playback [ Update]

May 17th 2006 1:03AM (Engadget HD)
Uh-oh! Forget the fact that they were faking Blu-Ray--they bootlegged a DVD! Where's the MPAA when you need them?

Creative sues Apple for violation of "Zen Patent"

This is really the fault of outdated patent law. You can hardly blame Creative for trying to cash in.

Blu-ray movies are cheaper than HD DVD

May 15th 2006 9:13AM (Engadget HD)
This guy lists prices for HD-DVD that are misleading or don't exist. The $31.99 title he listed is a HD-DVD/standard-DVD combo. The next two highest-priced titles he lists for HD-DVD aren't listed as far as I can tell.

Blu-ray movies are cheaper than HD DVD

Just checked--they're not combos. I can't explain the lower price for Blu-Ray titles. Although, the most expensive Blu-Ray discs are more expensive than the most expensive HD-DVD discs listed. Interestingly, a title announced for both formats, Chronos, is $0.50 more on HD-DVD.

Blu-ray movies are cheaper than HD DVD

That's really surprising considering that the cost HD-DVD media is much cheaper. Are you sure you're not talking about movies that contain both HD-DVD and regular DVD movies on the same disc? They're significantly more expensive than HD-DVD-only movies.

E3: What resolution are PS3 games running?

May 12th 2006 12:08PM (Engadget HD)
Hmmm... I'd like to say that's good news--but it does complicate things. Honestly, I'd rather not have to use my console as my primary player; but, with the estimated initial cost of Blu-Ray players @ $1000, I may make an exception. I'm not certain which format to hope comes out on top. Certainly, Blu-Ray seems to have all the technical advantages in their favor--but the cost of the media and players seems, at least at the moment, to be prohibitively expensive.

E3: What resolution are PS3 games running?

May 11th 2006 4:52PM (Engadget HD)
Games, yes--movies, no. Can't do movies at 1080p.

This is a quote from the live Joystiq E3 coverage:

5:12 - PS3 will support HD output at 1080i definition ... a level of sophisticaiton and reality that has never been experienced." PSP interopability with PS3 via network, memory stick, USB. "BluRay is a next generation format supported by major studios. Five of the six major Holywood studios are supporting BluRay."
