'Half of all Netflix users connect via a game console,' Nintendo Wii used most

Jul 28th 2011 1:24PM (Joystiq)
Doesn't surprise me as the install base for the Wii is huge, plus it doesn't have the pay-wall barrier that the 360 has with the XBL Gold membership requirement. I've got my rarely-ever used Wii set up in a guest bedroom that has no cable outlet, just so guests can watch some streaming Netflix while going to sleep.

I watch the majority of my Netflix streaming on my PS3 (which I game very little on), which I have more set up as a media player anyways. It's free (the PS3 service), in HD and easy enough to navigate.

I actually prefer, and think the Xbox 360 user interface is the superior (of the 3 consoles), but don't use it very much because I have my 360 hooked up to my PC monitor (I like to do my gaming sitting up in a chair with a surface to rest my arms on). If I want to watch some Netflix when I'm in that room I just do it via my PC as it allows me browse the internet in another window while I'm "watching."

Back when you still had to use a disc on the PS3 and Wii to stream Netflix, it was all Xbox for me, as I couldn't be bothered to keep track of those discs.

@Prince David

I know that for a while the UI on the PS3 was changing quite a bit, and from what I understood there were several variants out there in the wild at once that Netflix was testing.

For myself, if I'm watching a TV program and I want to see the individual episode description I have to go to the "See More Episodes" sub-menu. Whereas before, it used to give the description of the next episode in line to view in the first window after you selected the program (i.e. the "start/play" window).

Lego Pirates trailer is all violent mermaids, slapstick

Sorry for the mega-long delay on the reply...

The fact that you were exposed to the games through the DS very much explains it to me (nothing against the DS. I own one. I just don't do the majority of my gaming on it). I should've clarified that I played all those games on a console (360).

I test drove a friend's copy of LEGO Harry Potter (I had already played and completed the 360 game to a 100% at this point and loved it) on his DS and I only lasted about 20 minutes before I set it down with little interest in ever playing the LEGO DS games again.

LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 is the best of the newest bunch (& my personal favorite after the original Star Wars trilogy).

The Star Wars Complete Saga is the "baseline" for these games. Solid, enjoyable games that are a pretty good representations of the films.

Avoid the LEGO Indiana Jones series adaptations like the plague.

Batman is pretty good.

Star Wars III Clone Wars is okay (in addition to the norm gameplay, it includes a lot of their new psuedo-RTS gameplay. Vehicles are fun, but the game RTS mechanic is thin).

My question is, if you didn't think much of the games initially (I'm guessing you either played them or watched someone play them), besides guilt, why now? Your interest in the IP being presented in the game can help your enjoyment (though not for the Indy games, in my case).

I do think the quality has risen in the games, and there have many new small game mechanics added (and some removed after addition), but the same basic core gameplay from the first games is still in effect in the latest (smash stuff - build - use specific characters to complete certain tasks & repeat).

Making the Call of the Dead: Treyarch on Black Ops' celebrity zombie-fest

May 5th 2011 4:40PM (Joystiq)
The day EA allows Treyarch to make zombies its own separate title is the day I'm done buying Call of Duty proper games. Which is why it'll probably never happen any time soon.

I'm still not sure why they haven't released the re-made maps packaged with the higher end Black Ops editions. I'd buy them, just not at an approx. $20+ up-tick in price attached to some unwanted packaging.

Actually, going back and playing the older maps on my W@W disc with friends has only reminded me of how much more I enjoyed that game's multiplayer than anything in the series that came after it.

XBL Deal of the Week: Bad Company 2 DLC

You do need a copy of Battlefield Bad Company 2 to play the Vietnam DLC.

If you're interested in Vietnam, I highly recommend picking up a copy of the BFBC2 Ultimate Edition (basically comes with Onslaught and 1943 packaged in - buying new gets you the VIP code, & access to all the "free" map packs).

It can be found on sale if you're patient (start w/ online retailers like Amazon), new for as low as $25.

SPECACT essentially gives a duplicate of each of the last weapons you earn for each class (M16, UMP, MG3, & M95), which allows you to earn gold & platinum stars for those weapons as well (essentially, duplicating the gold star points). The weapons are no different, except for the skins (though when they first came out out they were slightly more "powered," unless they were nerfed in subsequent updates b/c that's all people used)

SPECTACT also gives you different class skins/uniforms, that can be used as map appropriate. The best example would be a white ghillie suit for the recon class on snow maps. This also reads as a 2nd kit set-up for each class in the re-spawn screen, that you can leave as a slightly different set up to rapid change to (although EA's terrible servers often wipe out what you use from session to session, and you have to start fresh with setting your kits up in almost every session).

It's value really only comes in if you play this game a lot. If you've platinum-ed any of the four weapons, it allows you to use the again and still earn gold star points towards ranking up... Other than that, it's mostly cosmetic.

Onslaught is a matchmade co-op (4-person squad) versus AI gametype that plays like a blend of Rush and Conquest.

Actually, it plays almost like Medal of Honor's "Combat Mission" mode if you've happened to play that. It's a running battle, where you have to stop to capture points before you can move on.

There are 4 maps, with (I think) 4 levels of difficulty.

There's not a ton of value there *unless* you like speed-running (the only kept stat is time) through a campaign-like level over and over.

Although, it is an excellent place to learn/practice piloting vehicles if you don't have enough willing bodies to get into a private lobby, or have never had the nerve to do it in multiplayer.

@Italian Stallion

I would say it's better to get points spend the 600 points on Vietnam (a much, MUCH more robust "stand-alone" DLC), if you don't already have it.

1943 is pretty sparsely populated now, and is something of a step backwards in gameplay from BC2 & Vietnam (& even BC1). I think DICE/EA saw it as something of an experiment, and it was an interesting one at that... when it was new.

Pure gameplay of Battlefield: BC2 Vietnam's Hill 137 and Vantage Point maps

@Rizraz Over powered compared to what?

In the video you can see two hit markers pop on enemies before they fall dead from the flame thrower, and that's with having to keep the flame stream on them constantly.

As opposed to the shotgun, which you see at the very beginning of the Vantage Point map footage, taking out three enemies with three shots, from a considerably greater distance...
