Conde Nast rethinks its iPad strategy

May 7th 2011 11:27AM (TUAW.com)
The fact that it took them this long to figure it out is astounding.

I'll pay $20 a year for WIRED but not $5 an issue.

You have no printing costs and no shipping costs, how do you justify $5 an issue in the first place?

Yes technology costs money but the platform, if built properly, should be a scalable asset that pays for itself over time.

The UI on the iPhone app is atrocious.

The iBookstore six months after launch: One big failure

Oct 14th 2010 12:20PM (TUAW.com)
The advantage of the iPad is that you can have multiple eBook stores.

As opposed to dedicated readers (Kindle, etc.), every major book retailer has a presence on the iPad (Barnes and noble, Amazon, Kobo).

It would be great if iBookstore got better as it would provide more competition but overall I think the iPad is still a great reading device.

In related news, new iPad case completely misses the point.

Apple's ad man changes roles, but another Apple fan will take his place

Oct 31st 2009 1:31PM (TUAW.com)
The worst part about this post is that not only is it inaccurate, it is late enough that the writer cold have gotten the proper facts.

Most other Apple rumour sites had this story yesterday, before Clow issued his statement that he was in fact not leaving, meaning that not only is this story late but it is inaccurate as well.

Being first and wrong is bad but somewhat understandable, being last and still wrong is simple inexcusable.

Tweetie 2 is now on the App Store

Great app but missing two key features:

-themes: at least a white text on black background option
-TRUE push notification: SMS messages are not good enough as some carriers charge for them

PC World's dashed WWDC expectations

Jun 12th 2009 9:40AM (TUAW.com)
I understand that Apple is an American company, and that they released the iPhone first in the U.S., but the Internet is global which means I'm tired of sites thinking that all anyone cares about is AT&T.

MMS and tethering are available in several countries at launch, the issue here is with AT&T, not Apple.

I think a lot of so called "pundits" are getting ahead of themsevles by thinking that Apple has that much direct control over what AT&T does. Yes Apple is a powerful company, and yes the iPhone has been carrying AT&T's profits for the past few years, but AT&T is still an independent company that does whatever it wants, even Apple only has so much control.

As for the other points, they are all bang on, wishing for something -- even if it is highly unlikely to happen -- doesn't give you the right to be pissed off when your highly unlikely thing doesn't happen.

FM radio is useless, the success of the iPod proves this conclusively as many of its competitors had Fm radio for years yet couldn't so much as dent Apple's market share.

Removable batteries will never happen, stop asking, stop wishing, it just isn't Apple's style.

And phantom products like the iPhone nano, iProd or iTablet are months if not years away.

People need to stop with the whining and unrealistic expectation.

New Aussie, Swiss Apple Store openings

Any news on the Ottawa, Canada store?

I think I know the spot where it is going in but there is still no confirmation that it is actually an apple Store.

Rock Band 2 confirmed for December 18 [update 1]

Dec 12th 2008 4:42PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Thanks for the release date clarification but can we get confirmation on the GHWT instrument compatibility?

This is the kind of thing that Nintendo should be mandating, they have the clout so why not force companies to make their peripherals inter-operable.

No one wants two sets of instruments lying around the house, at least no one with a mother, girlfriend or wife.

I have a hard enough time getting one set in the house.
