Erwos: You're right, Valve recently proved that they make significantly more total profits by lowering their game prices. I think I read that they more than doubled their total profit by dropping game costs from $50 to $10. Of course, this only works for GOOD games that people actually want.
Not dumb, because we also take another 10% off if we are part of the club. So we get the game for $50 instead of $60, with the option to return for our money back in 7 days.
I've probably returned more games than I've kept.. probably twice as many. But the ones I've kept have usually been games I wouldn't have tried otherwise, since the games I'm really excited about, I've bought new.
Game makers need to start having more confidence in their product. There are only so many dollars out there that can be applied to games. If buying a game meant owning it forever and permanently losing my $60, I'd almost never buy games, I'd just rent them from gamefly until I was tired of them.
No, the fact that selling the game is an option is the only reason I buy a lot of the games brand new, which translates to more sales for those game studios who make the good stuff. It's only those who make mediocre products that need to worry.
For the record, I'm talking about the 3D gameplay, not just the graphics. The ability to walk around the other player, not getting stuck in a corner, etc. It seems that much of SF4 is 3D in graphics but 2D in gameplay.
I'm confused about how this game is "a distillation of everything the genre does right." SF is the only fighting franchise still doing 2-dimensional fighting. You can put all the coolest graphics on the game, but if you can't circle your opponent, then it's still a 2D fighting game, and ALL other fighting games have gone the way of 3D arenas.
If they're sticking to 2D purely for the nostalgia factor, the game probably won't impress the new generation of players.
You can't knock a game for the single player being 4 hours, when it's clearly a game designed to have tons of replay value, both in single- and multiplayer modes.
Call of Duty 4 only took a handful of hours to beat the campaign but I've put in 10-20 times that many hours into the MP.
Hell, Shadowrun didn't even HAVE a single-player element, and I have never been more satisfied with a game purchase.
I had downgraded my netflix to 2 per month, but upgraded it again once the streaming service on Xbox was added. A lot of these tv shows and movies are things I wouldn't want to wait for in the mail, but on a whim they're cool.
Now Netflix just needs to get on top of adding more streaming content, they've got a LOT of really bad and mediocre stuff up for streaming, but the 4 and 5 star movies are pretty scarce.
