Why Final Fantasy XIII just didn't work
Jan 13th 2012 6:35PM (Joystiq)And you're entitled to your opinion. However, you don't speak for everyone. News stories act like they're speaking for the majority of the audience when they have no idea what that audience has to say about it. I think that was his aim to explain.

Jan 13th 2012 6:32PM (Joystiq)You must not have played FFVI then.
Why Final Fantasy XIII just didn't work
Jan 13th 2012 6:30PM (Joystiq)Um...what? You must be new to this series - or have been drinking too much turpentine.
There are only 2 direct sequels in the entire series, and both were announced after the original had been released.
I'm not aware of any direct prequels to any FF series to this day.
The mobile adaptation/spinoff thing has only been used for a couple games, they've been pretty recent, and the ovewhelming majority have been coupled with one game: FFVII.
Keep in mind that I'm only referring to the *main* FF series. Oddball releases like FF Tactics, Crystal Chronicles, Adventure, Legend and Type-0 don't count.
Why Final Fantasy XIII just didn't work
Jan 13th 2012 6:20PM (Joystiq)Very well said. I have to agree that most of the numbered Final Fantasy games have all been pretty linear. Although they drop you on some sort of overworld or let you walk about - you're still pretty much forced along a narrow path. FF13 was just a bit more up-front about it.
I personally think that the core audience of the FF series hasn't changed. I believe that since this is the first traditional FF to be released multi-platform (FFXI doesn't count), that it was seen by a larger audience - and coupled with the surge of western-style RPGs - garnered it more attention and more criticism.
In defense of Xenogears
Jan 7th 2012 8:29AM (Joystiq)I have to agree. I find that the best games I've played so far (this includes those that are not RPG's as well) are games that successfully weave the story into the gameplay without letting either get out of hand.
If you constantly play, play, play - it becomes a slog. If you constantly read, read, read - it also becomes a slog. Pure gameplay I can only take for short periods. In pure reading, I can also only take for short periods.
It's a case of 'to each his own' to be sure - but I'm of the opinion that they did wrong on this one. That 2nd disc bored me to tears. If I wanted to read a visual novel - I'd go buy the visual novel. Don't put a wall of text in a game and call it a game - because it's not. If they wanted to flesh out the story - keep it like disc one - then release a companion book or something. At least then when I buy the book - I'll know I'll be doing a lot of reading - and I can generate my own save points -- a bookmark.
Remembering an underappreciated JRPG trilogy
Dec 30th 2011 8:15PM (Joystiq)Played many games from Quintet - Actraiser, Robotrek (hard as heck), even the Granstream Saga (try and remember that one!). Ah - those were the days...
Now I just feel old. Meh.

Dec 25th 2011 10:04AM (Joystiq)The official Legend of Zelda timeline isn't entirely official yet
Dec 24th 2011 10:36PM (Joystiq)All retcon does is further destroy a timeline's legitimacy. Not only does it make it seem that the developer has no idea the direction it's going, but it's willing to erase its own content to do it. Never a good thing.
The official Legend of Zelda timeline isn't entirely official yet
Dec 24th 2011 10:32PM (Joystiq)Yes, it exists - and it makes no sense whatsoever. This is like reading a book on String Theory - it's a bunch of people trying to shoehorn together something that doesn't entirely mesh, and pass it off as fact. I'm not buying it.
The thing is - in order to have a proper timeline, the timeline has to be in place *before* the content is made. This seems like the opposite - they're trying to forge a timeline after the content has been made - and I bet money that the Zelda community will find holes in this timeline even though its the *official* one from Nintendo.
