The Daily Grind: What's the worst you've ever been griefed?

Apr 26th 2011 8:54AM (Massively)
Once I was playing my rogue alt in Duskwood in world of warcraft. A level 70 Warlock, hunter, and druid came in and griefed the low levels even in the crypts that day. I was so infuriated that I couldnt leave that I logged on my Warrior, found them together and while wearing my full set of pvp gear I farmed the 3 of them for several hours. They literally did NOT know how to CC, so at first they tried to all wake up together and take me, they tried to get up and distract me until the others were full health, eventually they all tried to separate, and still after a couple hours I farmed 2 of them, and then 1 of them, until he logged off.

Free for All: Is a subscription the new sign of trouble?

Apr 21st 2011 1:40AM (Massively)
..."and this is an honest observation -- I rarely hear a free-to-play fan say that he will avoid a game just because of its payment model."

-note that people who cannot afford subscriptions wont complain about them, because they will probably complain about not making enough money in general.

"Another common conversational theme that shows up almost every time we have this discussion is that free-to-play has done something wrong. Some seem to think that the free-to-play "movement" is equal to Walmart moving into their hometown, bringing lower-quality products and slower customer service with it. "

- I bet people who live in New York City wont admit to it because Walmart is banned in NYC. I suppose those people who wont admit it probably lost businesses or perhaps have seen the multiple documentaries about Walmart and how it does business.

Honestly, I cant really quote the rest of this and retort because the overall article is so one sided its disgusting. F2P are new and subscriptions are old?? We are addicted to shopping and get an instant gratification? Developers are seeing something that works and as they have been trying to break into that market they did the same thing with the Fantasy RPG Subscription franchise and continue to do so.

Pure subscriptions arent the odd man out when they also make more money than other payment types, and more accounts, and more popularity overall.

You-get-what-you-pay-for. And if you dont believe it, you can believe there are people willing to support a free game you are playing because they are gifted with money they dont need and dont care about spending on advantages and aesthetics.

Payment method has nothing to do with whether or not someone plays a game, quality and design does. The rest of it depends on whether or not they can afford games, because if they cant, they wont play games, or they will play whatever they can for free.

The Daily Grind: What two games would you combine?

Anarchy Onlines content and design, all of it. Coupled with World of Warcrafts engine and system developers/coders.

I would say, specifically Anarchy Online and the Shadowlands expansion, or i guess up until the SL expac, I dont know about the aliens, generally the content in AO is so wide that you dont know what is usefull and what isnt. I like that alot, but I wish it was more obvious.

WoW,s streamline Ui as well would benefit AO much, obviously the lack of lag, the smooth shaders but sharp shaders even when at low graphics. Perhaps the detail of the map, or the accessability to them rather than being an independent skill (AO you would have to raise a skill and buy maps) I think that simplification of skills to some* extent would be nice, but not homogenization of stats and items, that is terrible with World of Warcraft. In AO, finding a great weapon over everyone else is a FEAT OF STRENGTH. Look up Enhanced Pads of Dedication, sure you could go get an item in a dungeon, and have a 20% chance for the mobs to spawn every 20 minutes with a 50% chance the item will drop, and you share that spawn and loot with whomever gets 51% of the damage on the target, if that wasnt unlikely enough, but those Enhanced Pads of Dedication are from a quest that took me 14 hours strait and support of a Guild (Organization in AO, aka Org)

AO's class mechanics, content and design streamlined into the WoW engine with some trimming by wow devs would be fan-tastic.

Actually, I have a question. In regard to coverage of the MMO industry, do you guys (the writers) write articles and/or blogs based off of developer; publisher; company updates on websites? Are specific writers acquainted with specific companies and their games to provide coverage?

Lets say for example: writer A playtests alot of MMORPGS for Nexon, does that mean amongst only his articles he will be the one to write about them given that he keeps up with the new information?

Ive always noted that there are alot of Eve Online news blogs here, so can I assume that, actually I could probably verify that, a certain writer or writers are affiliated with that game and even though they do write articles covering various other games, they reliably and perhaps are expected to write articles concerning what is going on in the Eve Online Universe? (Or CCP in general)

I actually love* my close to but not actually MMORPGS, online games that are RPGS that ALOT of people play, but not in a consistent world. Such as Phantasy Star Online, Monster Hunter (series), League of Legends. I could imagine covering information regarding the possible upcoming games like these to console and PC from those specific companies. (That would be SEGA, Capcom, Riot Games, and games like them.)

I still need to re-install Vindictus and give it another go, but I just picked up a new game on console >

I have played and play tested MANY MMORPGS on a low end machine, ive lived in an internet cafe as a NEET, with no job or home, playing MMO's. But I cant say that I could deliver articles about various MMOs, not because I cant write, because I most definitely can. However, I have never relied on writing as an income, and I cant risk letting go my day job to do so. Furthermore, I am too critical with certain developers based on their previous products that I have tried or reviewed. I find that writing for me is too passionate to be delivered in such a consistent way. Certainly I could provide works that range from the philosophical comparisons to the down right beta testing reviews, but it would all be specific to my own interests.

Thanks for the brief hope, Massively, but I couldn't expect to apply my love for MMOs in such a fashion so conditionally. Too bad you dont accept volunteer work, because I love freelance work. And I dont work 12pm to 4pm either :(

BBC suggests gold farming may bolster poorer economies

This is a new angle to look at this, and I have to say, poor communities wouldnt benefit as much if WoW wasnt so easy to run, but, I actually applaud the fact that this is a job for poor people in 3rd world countries, in reality, Blizzard created jobs everywhere, that has to be Global Peace Prize worthy, right?
