Ubuntu Hardy: The latest and greatest or a total mess?

Apr 2nd 2008 6:00PM (Download Squad)
Have you been performing distro upgrades with each new release, or have you been reinstalling with each new release? In my experience, the former never goes well. I always perform a fresh install. You have to reinstall your apps but as long as you back up your /home before doing it, it's hardly any bother.

"Now, I know people are going to point out that this beta isn't meant for daily use, but that just doesn't cut the mustard."

Yes, actually it does. Beta doesn't mean in Linux what it means to, say, Google. Beta is unfinished, buggy, and only released so that the community can help debug. A beta release of Ubuntu is absolutely *not* meant for daily use, end of story.

It's still a few weeks until the final release. Do you realise how much work will go into 8.04 between now and then? I'll bet you a fiver that the final release will be rock solid. So nur. :p

Flipping the Linux switch: The anti-virus question

Nadiv, Linux has a built-in firewall called iptables. On Linux, rather than running a firewall application, what you do is run a front-end for iptables. It amounts to the same thing though. I recommend Firestarter due to its user-friendliness.

Great article, Kristin. I never bother to run AV software on Linux. I don't think anyone else I know does either. I don't care if any nasties make their way to Windows machines, they're bound to get them sooner or later anyway. ;)

It isn't bad for what it is, but there are nowhere near enough people playing and it gets boring quite quickly.

The second paragraph of that article says that not only is it version 2.0.4 *and prior*, but also that version 2.3 is unaffected.

I think you should post an apology, Ted.

Impossible Mission screens are evidence of actual Wii Ware

As someone who played and loved both IM and IM2 on the Commodore 64, *any* kind of graphical improvement is good! I can't wait for this one.

By the way, play.com is listing it as a 31/08/07 release, while Amazon says 10/08/07.
