Double Fine's 'Amnesia Fortnight' game design jams saved the company

Aug 26th 2011 8:47PM (Joystiq)
I'm ready to take flak for this, but of all of those released games, I only found Costume Quest to be fun. Stacking was original, but never really captured my attention. Trenched I just didn't like.

Rumor: Gameloft's 'Bullet' is the Red Dead Redemption your phone's been waiting for

@Knives Chau

That would be a difficult case to prove.

It also helps that CEO Michel Guillemot is brother of Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.

Halo: Reach title update coming in September, Armor Lock getting nerfed

Aug 26th 2011 1:16PM (Joystiq)
I think most players adapted to Armor Lock by now. It's not a guarantee winning armor permutation. I've been killed plenty of times while using Armor Lock and have also killed plenty of people that were using Armor Lock.

I'm a bit confused by the pistol change. It seems like they should've been specific to the Halo Anniversary maps or the inevitable Halo Anniversary playlist. When Bungie was still running things, they did have a "Classic" playlist which was full of Forge remakes of old maps and had modified stats to be more Halo: CE-like.

We'll see what 343 does, I guess.

Halo Anniversary adds 3 more maps, including PC version's 'Timberland'

w00t! Timberland was one of my favorites!

Razer unveils $2800 'Blade' laptop

Waiting for the Switchblade. But judging by how ridiculous the Blade's price is, I don't think I should get too excited.

Is it time to kill tanking?

Aug 25th 2011 9:46PM (WoW)
A simple feedback system like Xbox Live's sounds like a simple solution to having to deal with idiots in PUGs, regardless of role.

Is it time to kill tanking?

I agree with you. I'm not a tank, but I normally don't have issues with tanks (or healers). (The commenters sure seem to hate tanks...) Sure, I've run into the AFK healer, a Frost DK tank, and even a warrior wearing Intelligence gear, but it's not the point where I've developed a hatred of tanks or healers nor am I running into sucky PUGs that often.

I do believe there should be instances that aren't just "tank and spank" however as I commented below. It just sucks for the anti-social players or players that aren't having luck finding guilds are basically missing out on a ton of end game content and are stuck with pretty much just PvP to get phat lewt.

Is it time to kill tanking?

"Well, for starters, while healing makes a certain amount of sense to people who've played other games, the idea of the tanking figure is fairly unique to the MMO genre and has more or less existed in that genre to help make up for the games' lack of intelligence. The original tank and spank encounters were designed around the idea that the game needed help to decide who the monsters would be hitting. After all, their roots are in pen and paper RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, but there's no game master to tell the monsters what to do."

I guess this has been the major issue I've had. I'm a bit of an anti-social player. I haven't had much luck with guilds on Magtheridon, at least. They seem to all be grinding guilds and not actually raiding these days (at least on the Alliance). The only guild-run raid I've been on was ZG back in the day but that was after nearly a month of preparation by the guild and back in the pre-BC days! I've dabbled in a couple of AQ raids but that's all the raiding I've done in very recent memory (I'm very on and off with my sub or I'm using trial time). I want to experience raid content, but I can't because I don't have a guild to play with. I'm looking forward to the Raid Finder, but there seems to be no guarantee that old raids will be accessible for a higher level like myself which would be disappointing for me.

I personally found the whole "tank and healer" paradigm odd and foreign just because I never played pen and paper RPG's like D&D. As a DPS, I feel like I am nearly useless besides helping to do damage. Simply "tanking and spanking" seems to always get the job done. I feel like DPS is there to get through mobs faster and make sure the healer doesn't burn through all of their mana. I heard raid bosses require a little more movement, but I am not well-versed in raids as I previously mentioned.

However, I feel like changing or getting rid of that tank/healer paradigm could result in a more action-oriented game which I assume most players do not want. Another fairer idea is making solo instances. I do hope the idea of solo instances is heard by Blizzard. I have no idea how this should be designed or implemented because of just how you really need a tank and healer to beat Elite mobs quite frankly with the current paradigm. Maybe we go Diablo-style and pickup a bunch of potions and do self-healing? Maybe there is something to learn from Diablo? The game is certainly playable single player, but it's definitely more fun and more beneficial playing it multiplayer while at the same time you get the same content and experience if you choose to go it alone. From what I've heard, the Star Wars MMO is getting a whole planet dedicated to solo endgame content. Maybe something like that could come to WoW?

Just thinking aloud.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations 'Ultimate Edition' bundle revealed by GameStop

Aug 25th 2011 4:27PM (Joystiq)
While GameStop still sucks, overpriced Limited/Collector's Editions are the fault of publishers and the people dumb enough to buy them. About 90% of these will be on clearance for much cheaper later. (Still finding Collector's Edition of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood at Best Buy, for example.)
