BlackBerry Storm in action, ad nauseam

Oct 20th 2008 1:43PM (Engadget)
Nope it will also work in the US. The Verizon Storm is CDMA and quad band GSM plus 2100mhz 3g. So CDMA + 2G GSM in the states, 2G and 3G GSM for most of the other places in the world.

I second that, it runs surprisingly well on my system at the low settings and it still looks pretty good IMHO. It is much smoother on my system than Bioshock or Enemy Territory for example.

Apple and Orange together at last in France

That is *exactly* what Apple should have done in the first place if they didn't wanted the whole unlocking thing. They could have then sold the phone unlocked directly for a huge premium and still keep a contract sbusidized price for a carrier exclusive deal... like every other cell phone...

@conscience: You are really living in a US cell phone providers PR dream aren't you?

The iPhone is a GSM phone like any other GSM phone. The whole point is that you are able to switch the SIM and have everything working the same as before. In Europe that crap about a phone tied to a provider doesn't fly. People know that they can be unlocked or that they can switch the SIM.

No I just meant if they force and update on your phone that bricks it, it probably should be illegal.

But yes if it is not required and you update anyway... well.. that is quite stupid. ;)

I don't really see how they can brick someone phone and not get sued. Unlocking is legal. I bought the phone legally, I unlocked it legally why could they just brick my phone?

They can stop to support it or void the warranty but not brick it.

The DMCA *explicitly* exclude unlocking a phone as illegal.

I'm wondering if it is legal of Apple to brick hacked phone as it is legal for us to unlock our phones. I'm pretty sure someone who got their phone bricked could sue them for destroying their property.

I'm sure Apple can void the warranty or refuse to support the phone in future iTunes updates however. It is part of the game...

The rules are as pmow put it that it is legal to unlock a phone.

For almost *every* other cell phones what they do is that they sell the phone subsidized with a contract and almost all of them are available to buy directly from the phone maker at full price unlocked.

Apple could have offered the phone at a cheaper price exclusive to AT&T and full price directly from them. But they didn't.... they tried to get both the full phone price and the contract. But in the end we have the right (ie. it is legal) to unlock our phones.
