Sony is following the lead of the Bush administration: deny what's really going on and just repeat your BS lines over and over until someone believes them.
Umm... all owners are satisfied? Not quite. I have one and it's collecting dust. I have been completely unsatisfied with it. It's a $600 paperweight, and Blu-Ray movies don't even look that good (HDDVD playback is much nicer, even though it's via component and not HDMI).
This thing is a joke. I wish I could get my money back.
It really depends upon the studio you work for. I work as a sound guy for an independent game studio (console games, major publishers and we've had multiple award-winning titles), and life is fantastic. Sure, I might be making more money working in advertising, but I used to do that and I wasn't nearly as happy as I am now.
I'm all for more pay. Bring it on. But it's not a rainy scene everywhere in the industry, just in some places. There are those of us who are quite happy where we are.
I picked up Red Steel and Trauma Center. It's actually kind of nice that they're selling some of this early. While I'm not flipping out for anything with Wii on it, occasionally my bank card has been declined when making large purchases that are abnormal, and I'd hate for that to happen at midnight on Saturday when I pick up my Wii. By buying the games early, I'm minimizing the hit to my card.
I guess I could have taken cash out of an ATM though... that would have worked too :)
The only good show on G4 is "Game Makers." Unlike Icons, they actually talk about real game industry people and the history behind them.
I agree with comment #3. They never gave gaming TV an honest shot. Instead they gave a half-assed attempt at wooing us with allegedly pretty girls who know next to nothing about games (Morgan Webb being the one exception, she seems to have a clue) and subjecting us to Attack of the Show and Fastlane. Weak.
An all-gaming network is a fantastic idea. It could be done well. It just hasn't been.
A) It's not about the hardware, it's about the control scheme and the software. It amazes me that so many people make comments about how "it will only sell half" and blah blah blah when none of you have played it. I have played it, and I'm sold.
B) Nintendo has historically tried to avoid shortages on console launches. The DS situation got a bit out of hand, and they felt bad about that. They realize the negative feelings that come from situations like the 360 and PS2 launches and they try to avoid that. They don't want their product associated with that sort of negative madness. I don't blame them.
C) I think this is fantastic news, and will make it even easier for me to get one of these things. Even if there are more than they can sell, they're making a profit on the HARDWARE, at launch! This is unprecedented. That, combined with the state of the DS market leaves them in a good position. Every item associated with the Wii... the hardware, accessories, software, all of it generates profit. There is no loss incurred on any of it. That extra profit will create a buffer that will counteract any overstock issues they may have. And, to be frank, I'm still convinced it's going to sell out. Again... just wait until you play this thing. It's amazing.
I find it amazing how personal all of you are getting, on either side of the fence. It's business. It's a game machine. Deal with it.
I think Sony has chosen a very poor way to handle the press and the public this time around. I think their entire PR team should be fired. I think their execs have dropped a few really stupid lines lately. But am I going to sit around and rip on them? No.
I'm going to wait until a piece of software I want is released for the machine, and then I'm going to buy it. If there is no such piece of software, then I won't buy it.
Speak with your wallets. Stop flaming game industry executives on a web forum. If he doesn't care about his competition, then he sure as hell doesn't care what YOU think.
And, speaking to the racist remarks, saying crap like that proves how ignorant and uneducated you are. I don't care if the Japanese ARE xenophobic, don't be a bigoted pimple-faced jackass about it. Be a better person, set an example, lead a happy life.

Kutaragi on Sony's competition: "We don't care." [update 1]
