Joyswag: Joystiq's Legendary Halo 3 Giveaway

Oct 2nd 2007 4:33AM (Joystiq)
Scarabs aren't too high on my list to find in a dark alley, whether I be armed to the teeth or proverbially wet without a stitch.

I'm feisty though, so let me at them. I'll show those walking monstrosities what a drunken, one armed, Latvian pugilist can do! Well.. as soon as I find one, at least.

GTAIV trailer is live. Thoughts?

ChroMagnon -

"6. Meh, pretty non-gameplay movies pictures don't a great game make. I was hoping for some real gameplay footage and not more of this Madden-esqe RTV hype"

Would it make you feel better to know those were gameplay images? They're using the Euphoria software in their engine now.

Fanswag: Fanboys Fight for The Darkness

The 360 version of The Darkness is better than the PS3 version because ... more LIVE lurks in the fibers of our 360.

Shadowrun reviews bother FASA

I've told multiple people about the game, stating in an excited tone "I don't know why nobody has combined an FPS with RPG/magic aspects like this before!".

They have, it was called Jedi Knight and Jedi Outcast.

Probably a slew more, but of course they were all PC.

Anyhow, Shadowrun blows hard for $60. They would have been much brighter to release the game at the $39.99 price point and quickly come up with DLC to fill the divide.

Video: BioShock open-ended gameplay

MDB, You're making a pretty big assumption when you insinuate people will always play the same. My personality type, for example, prefers to ditch even a winning strategy after a few rounds. I eat different foods from different cultures and enjoy travel. In other words, I'm not sedentary in my views or narrow in what I like. I'm draw to modern gaming due to the variety it can bring, so - I say to myself - why not explore the range of that variety?

Now, from a particular standpoint you are correct in saying a well crafted multiplayer might last you longer than a single player experience, thus invalidating the worth of the SP title. From that same standpoint, I take it you never watch movies in the theater, right? This might sound like a non-sequitur to you, but have you even notice that a $6 box office movie gives the same ratio of cost to experience as a $60 game? $6 / 2 hours = $3 per hour. A $60 game / 20 hours (low end for a decent title, imho) = the same thing.

The point I'm trying to make is a mere 20 - 30 hours game might just be worth the cost in the same limited sense as a novel or a movie. Sure, the multiplayer experience, in theory, could pay off for 100 years - but money says you'll eventually get bored of it as well (entropy is inherent to all things). What the multiplayer experience will never give are well crafted objectives, a salient story arc, a sense of completion that lasts for more than a fleeting second before being forgotten or a sense of evolution (character or story).

Anyhow, google "system shock".. This game is more than a mere FPS.

EA cancels LOTR: The White Council?

Guys, if you look closely you'll see this was acquired from Xbox 360 Fanboy. That would be why it singles out the 360 version, as the original author was speaking solely to that demographic.

Rockstar appoints old friend as new COO

Jan 4th 2007 12:59AM (Joystiq)
So can anybody elaborate on what exactly a Chief Operating Officer's job duties entail? Tis bit of a crap article as it doesn't really frame anything in perspective.

Also, I might be going out on an unpopular limb here but the original GTA was a bit crap as well. It didn't really make an impression till GTA III (which launched in 2001, to frame the reference).

Kudos to whomever scored that video with Aphex Twin's Power Pill. That took me back. :)

Mortal Kompat: Petition

Jul 2nd 2006 3:31AM (Joystiq Xbox)
The biggest difference between Psychonauts and this petition campaign is the former was spearheaded by the lead developer, a legend in the 1990s PC game development circles.

More power to these guys, but I wouldn't associate the Psychonauts request with this.
