At first i found it weird too, but not anymore.

To me it is kind of obvious why they would cast a black guy as a norse god.
The norse mythology and norse runes and symbolism sadly have been instrumentalized by white supremacists. I don't know about the USA, but here in Germany you can get thrown out of a club for wearing a Thor's Hammer pendant, so racism and norse mythology are often associated with each other.

So it comes as no surprise that the producers don't want any racists to like their movie. The boycott of the movie by those groups is all they could have hoped for. They can make an (hopefully) awesome movie in an unspent scenario and have none of the negative associations. Win/Win.

For me, the Plug looks exactly like the TV out of my GP2X. If you believe it is shoppen, then fine, but the plug certainly is no reason for scepticism.
