In defense of the "PlayStation generation"

Mar 4th 2007 3:45PM (Joystiq)
"Students aren't shying away from math and science because the subjects are hard -- they're shying away because no one has made these subjects interesting to them."

Well said. Math and Science are fun subjects, but they are usually presented horribly, or their stereotype for being "nerdy" or difficult supersedes reality. History is usually presented poorly as well (I still hate it).

Look at Brain Age...it uses simple math and problem solving, but it's fun. Talk about a scapegoating the wrong activity.

"Because HDMI is percieved to be better. It isn't superior to component or VGA. It is one of Sony's PR moves that is actually working the way it is intended."

Wow...someone who actually knows what they are talking about. The difference between component and HDMI is so miniscule that all the hype is a joke. It's like the difference between VGA and DVI on PC's....it's not worth the trouble and most people don't notice a difference.

Guess what...downloaded content from XBLA in HD look better than the Blu-ray movies I bought and played on my PS3 (even with HDMI). No HDMI required for the XBLA content; component works great. That also means no HDCP hassles.

I'm starting to wonder about the fuss on hard drive sizes. I'll never use the 60GB in my PS3 (Linux, worthless demos, and a couple of gamesaves...that's it), and I still have 6GB on my 360 (had it since launch). Music? Just stream it. The PS3 will support that properly someday...

U.S. next to lose PS3 backward compatibility?

Feb 24th 2007 3:55PM (Joystiq)
So?

I don't play original Xbox games other than Halo 2, and I certainly don't play any PS2 games. If I wanted to, I would use the slim or brick PS2 anyway, because even with the update, it still looks better on a PS2 than the PS3. On the PS2, I played FF7, FF8, and I.Q. on random weeks a couple years ago because I was bored...in the end, the BC wasn't that valuable.

I think backwards compatibility is given way too much credit. If you still want to play PS2 games...just keep your PS2. There's no reason to buy a PS3 yet anyway!

"those who own the console are happy"

I'm happy because I also have a Wii and a 360. If I just had a PS3, I'd be pissed, because I'd never play video games. Entertainment? What, Blu-ray? Linux? Please. DVD is fine, and PS3 Yellow Dog is a joke (no GPU support? What a waste). If you like irritating entertainment and high-price with low-return, buy a PS3.

Oblivion: Downgraded for PS3, not happening on Wii [update 1]

Feb 10th 2007 3:18PM (Joystiq)
I'm sorry, but the PS3 still sucks. What's the point? Yes, I have one, but I hate it. A lot. Oooh...Oblivion had more development time and a few things look prettier. Big deal. The only the difference between my Xbox 360 and my PS3 is that the former is easier to use, the controllers never have a problem, and it's more fun to play. Oh yeah, and it actually gets used.

And why would anyone want Oblivion for the Wii? It's just not the console for those types of games, which has already been proven on the multiplatform titles it has received. The Wii is great, but we need some more games for it that aren't for the other systems. It's just not going to compete in the same arena as the other two. It will need complete different games suited for it, rather than horrible attempts at ports. If they want to use established IP, then they will have to do the Sonic and Resident Evil style "Wii-only" versions.

Nvidia: saying graphics don't matter is 'nonsense'

Feb 2nd 2007 7:45PM (Joystiq)
Graphics are a part of the game, and to say they don't matter is nothing short of pure naivite.

I love Wii Sports, but Zelda: Twilight Princess is hard to look at after experiencing games like Lost Planet, or Gears of War. To lesser extent, Halo 2 or Resistance: Fall of Man, Resident Evil 4, and Ninja Gaiden are much more pleasing aesthetically.

With Wii Sports, the graphics aren't part of the game. There's no story or emotions. Just little toy figures jumping around the screen that represent the player. So graphics aren't needed to be good. This of course, is a special situation. The better games of our times have been outstanding combinations of graphics, gameplay, story, and audio (and rumble in some cases).

With the PS3, imagine saying graphics doesn't matter in a game like Final Fantasy. In the past, the cutscenes took the weight of conveying emotion (at the expense of removing the player from gameplay). Now that we are using in-game engines, graphics matter a lot. If graphics didn't matter, then I'd be content playing FFVIII over and over.

I personally think the Wii will wear thin to me after a year or so, unless they get some really amazing games (aside from Mario and Metroid).

PSP firmware 3.10 released, and decrypted

Feb 1st 2007 4:22AM (Joystiq)
I find it funny that PSP's get more used for hacking toys than for gameplay. You'll hear more about firmware getting cracked than "great new games". The PSP isn't worth the effort, really. As long as I don't have to Sonyify my PSP to use with my PS3, I'm good.

Sony not ready to rumble with Splitfish

Feb 1st 2007 4:19AM (Joystiq)
I like rumble. The SIXAXIS controller feels like junk without it, especially when going to the 360 or the Wii afterwards (or before).

Quite frankly, part of what made Resistance intolerable to me is that it wasn't always obvious you were getting shot if you were focused on something else. When a grenade goes off closeby...it just isn't felt (think of the rumble+sound+visual effects used in Call of Duty). It made the weapons feel empty, and removed from the experience.

Rumble is great as merely an indicator that something is going on, or if it's simply your turn (think Uno, Texas Hold 'em, or Wii Sports). Dual motors isn't necessary, but it's nice.

I don't think the 360 needs motion control yet, because Sony hasn't really proved that the SIXAXIS motion control is worth anything. Shaking a guy off me in Resistance was more annoying than "adding to the experience". Even playing Zelda with the Wii remote doesn't really show that motion control is "oh so amazing". Aside from Wii Sports and Super Swing Golf, is anything taking notable advantage of motion control? I don't think so.

Active gaming burns more calories, coordination still a concern

"11 Sorry for the bad news, but other those few games Xbox fanboys were screaming and wagging their tales of to, the PS side was getting all the games and then some. RPGs on Xbox? Those are for sissys, right?"

Yes, but don't forget that Xbox took multiplatform about every time.

I had my PS2 a year and a half before I got an Xbox. I never played the damn thing aside from FFX, FFX2, and Xenosaga. Maybe a couple of others here and there. I found that about the only thing it was good for was RPGs. Once the Xbox came along, I started gaming regularly. And trust me, I was very resistant at first to the damn Halo parties in the house I was renting. I got sucked in, I'll admit it.

Sure, the PS2 has a lot of games for it...but it also has a lot of crappy titles that make one tire of gaming.

Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden alone put any FPS or action game on the PS2 to shame. Including Killzone and God of War.

The problem wasn't that the Xbox sucked, the problem was the sucky PS2 was too damn popular and stole many a possibilities away.

I loved my PS1 (screw you N64), but I can't say that the PS2 was the best gaming experience for me in the last generation.
