The good and bad of iPad pricing
Feb 2nd 2010 1:04AM (TUAW.com)At this point, it's of little interest to me, but I might change my mind. I wonder if all the Ipod touch apps I own can be moved over to this. I doubt it.
Whenever I see this, it reminds me of those super huge TV remotes with the 1" buttons my grandmother beulah uses.
I can't believe Apple thinks it can get away with charging $14 for an electronic book.
Anyway, the price is fair, so I may end up buying one. I just can't help but keep comparing it to those huge TV remotes for some reason.
Pioneer's 12x BDR-205 Blu-ray burner is so fast it's ahead of its time
Sep 30th 2009 2:36PM (Engadget)Ask Engadget: Best wireless laptop / mobile mouse?
Sep 19th 2009 6:06AM (Engadget)For years i've never been able to get used to a wireless mouse of any kind on a 24" LCD. Somehow they do ok for me on a laptop however. Well, i've finally found a wireless mouse that has none of that micro-lag. Even the most expensive mice seems to have very minor lag. It was so small and you could barely notice it, but it was enough to keep me away from any type of wireless mouse.
I picked up the Microsoft Mobile Mouse 4000 and it's by far the best tracking mouse i've ever owned. The Blue-Track stuff is no marketing gimmick and it really works better. I swear that on my 24" LCD and laptop there is absolutely no lag for once. I like it so much that's it's at my desktop full time and I now need to buy another one for my laptop. The only negative is that the wheel feels a bit cheap and that's where the VX revolution beats it.
The quality isn't as good as the VX Nano or Revolution (both cost like $70 retail) but it's only $40. It's too bad they're hard to find still. It took me about two weeks to find one locally.
Paradigm's SE 1 speaker backs up its value proposition in blind testing
Sep 8th 2009 3:18PM (Engadget HD)I purchased some $1000+ speakers before and can honestly say it will never happen again due to them even being worse then my JBL floor standing Northridge speakers. My Infinity P362s are the best i've found yet and they only cost $200 each. It seems that all the speakers from small companies that gets dozens and dozens of rave reviews online are really the worst to my ears. Maybe I just have bad luck. I've always had better luck from the JBL's, Infinity and Polks. No idea why this is. To this day i've never had any bad experiences with JBL. Even their crappy $15 computer speakers sound decent for the price!
Philips serves up two new Senseo brewmakers at IFA, still won't dethrone Starbucks
Sep 6th 2009 10:31PM (Engadget)I wish I could drink coffee but it messes up my stomache. One type didn't. It was something grown in Hawaii, but i'm not sure what it was called. Kona something or other. Not sure why this is. Maybe it was just a coincidence.
I should buy a coffee maker. I haven't owned one in about 10 years or so. A year ago I was going to get a Senseo or similar brewer until I read some reviews on them and heard about the prices of the coffee pods. I wonder who makes the best coffee makes these days? Hopefully not Mr. Coffee
Walmart expands Durabrand DVD player recall to 4.2 million
Sep 1st 2009 9:01PM (Engadget)I'm sure this DVD player was junk and would never go this low when buying a DVD player. Some of the cheap players though can easily made region free. Back years ago I purchased a Daewoo DVD Player for $40 and made it region free and it was the best player I owned. Back then though nobody had heard of progressive scan, DVI or HDMI.
Right now the 1080p Philips players are the best deals. They're decent. I just wish I could buy a second Oppo, but $200 on a second one that's used only on a few times a week will hurt a bit.
Grado takes on the earbud with the GR8
Aug 30th 2009 8:53PM (Engadget)It's too bad most of the good earphones really need a headphone amp. My ipod will drive the Triple Fi 10's ok, but my Sansa Fuze sounds terrible without one.
I imagine these Grados are good. I have the SR-80 and they're the best pair of headphones for the price, but I absolutely HATE the design and think it's worthless. It's probably just to cut costs, but who knows.
Xbox 360 price drops go global on Friday, it's official
Aug 27th 2009 10:43PM (Engadget)The Xbox 360 as a piece of hardware is sadly very unreliable, but they've fixed that problem by now. I hope. It just stinks that I have to power off my Xbox once a day just to play a game. It's not like I can just stop playing my Xbox and only go with the PS3. I'll pretty much buy any system that has good games I want to play. Despite all it's faults, I just can't give up my Xbox.
The PS3 seems to have a lack of games. Hopefully with the price cut a lot more will be released.
I was once a fan of Blu-Ray, but to be honest, i've been way more selective lately. $25-$30 for a movie is a rip-off. On average i'll now only buy 2 a month. What makes me even more mad is blu-ray new releases in Japan or in Europe before we even get them. Then there is that issue with BD-R media costing like $85+ for a 25 pack when it's dirt cheap in Japan.
VIZIO keeps the LCD TV crown in Q2, but Samsung is closing
Aug 25th 2009 2:49AM (Engadget HD)Not everyone can afford a Sony or a Samsung, despite being only maybe a hundred more. If my Sony ever dies and I can't repair it myself, i'll probably just get another Vizio and save myself some money. Yes, I'm even picky about picture quality and I own a Vizio.
For a secondary display or even a primary, a Vizio LCD is perfectly fine.
Game Informer: Xbox 360 at 54.2 percent failure rate
Aug 17th 2009 4:43PM (Joystiq)A year later I bought another Xbox 360 and it's still working to this day. I've had it for years. I've only had the RROD once due to overheating. It was during Fallout 3 on "The Pitt" expansion. I've had about two dozen random lockups in games in the 3 or so years i've had it. Since I got one of those cooling fans for the back it hasn't locked up since, but maybe it's a coincidence. About 6 months ago it also randomly would not read discs i've inserted unless I power it off and start it back up. Hasn't done that in 3 months now. All the discs were new and in perfect condition. No scratches, dirt or fingerprints.
I also have an "Arcade" Jasper unit in my bedroom and it hasn't locked up or had many issues yet. Strangely the load times are way higher. Perhaps they used a cheaper DVD-ROM in it. In Fallout 3 to exit Megaton it takes about 1 minute. Not a big deal, but still slower then my old Xbox. It also seems to always be reading something constantly on the disc. Never noticed that with my old Xbox. I think perhaps it's due to my Arcade version not having a hard drive. Never installed Fallout 3 to my hard drive on the other one though, but maybe it still uses it temporarily. Who knows.
