Syndicate review: The business of aggressive expansion

Feb 21st 2012 6:03PM (Joystiq)
Does the author know that this isn't the same Starbreeze team that worked on "Butcher Bay" and "The Darkness"?

Like, it's almost a different development team entirely: http://www.1up.com/features/starbreeze-secret-history.

Journey beta preview: Feeling small

Jul 25th 2011 7:33PM (Joystiq)
Cool concept and great art direction. The premise of the game is similar in a way to an idea that I've always thought would be cool for a first or third-person action/adventure game. In my case though, you've got two distinct characters with their own specific storylines, but at different points throughout the game their paths might converge (perhaps unknowingly), or there may be instances where they have to work together to get past some sort of obstacle. Or perhaps the two characters' stories are very much linked and decisions that one character makes in their own playthrough have repercussions for the other and vice versa (but this isn't known until it happens).

Almost week after I'm telling my buddy on XBL about how cool a game like that could be, I hear about the Journey beta. Imagine something with Bioshock's atmosphere and storytelling, but with a heavy narrative focus and teamwork elements that aren't immediately apparent and aren't necessarily thrown in your face. Maybe the game doesn't even tell you that what you think is an NPC is an actual player until one of you accidentally speaks into your mic.

Anyway, I wanted in on that beta but missed out. I'll definitely be picking this up when it drops though.

BioShock Infinite visits new world in latest media

Jun 24th 2011 3:42PM (Joystiq)
Any game that Levine and co. put out, I am buying. The worlds and atmospheres that he and IG are able to create make are the reason why I want to become a filmmaker and, hopefully, translate some of that to gaming to create even more unique, and story-driven experiences.

Infinite is the only upcoming game that I'm truly hyped for.

XCOM inducing singularities on March 6, 2012

Jun 3rd 2011 3:53PM (Joystiq)
@Atonnis Not only that but what they've shown wouldn't even be impressive if it were a completely new IP. Where are the greys? They just replaced the covenant with these weird block-constructed foot soldiers and everything about it makes it seem like a straight up run 'n gun FPS.

They'd better have a lot more to show at E3 because the first trailer implied a much different tone than what I saw here.

BioShock Infinite preview: Tears in the Sky-line

@CaptainProtonX

Still doesn't really answer the question of why they kept the name if the game appears so different? More like an excuse to get a little philosophical on the writer's part. I understand it fine, and I always thought that it was called Bioshock again because it takes place in the same universe (seems to have plasmids and the like again) but the question of "why keep the name" wasn't really answered was it?

2K Australia studio head resigns in the middle of XCOM; 2K responds

Mar 1st 2011 11:35AM (Joystiq)
Maybe we'll get some confirmation at PAX, or later at E3, but, there ARE going to be other aliens than just black goo right? I mean, we HAVE to have some Greys right?

Can we get a nighttime level dealing with investigating a rash of alien abductions?

AvP, Modern Warfare 2 on XBL Games on Demand, Bayonetta next week

Feb 18th 2011 1:25PM (Joystiq)
@thenutman69321 There are certain titles that I may have slept on or just not played when they were first released that, due to a combination of convenience, price, the sort of use that I think I'd get out of it, that would make a few worthwhile.

There's one game in particular that's releasing in the coming months that I know I'd purchase and probably keep (I rarely sell my games anyway) and that's L.A. Noire. If I could pre-order that and have it auto-download on release date for full price or perhaps $10 less, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I think I'm gonna grab Dead Space for $20 since I haven't played that yet. And if I hadn't already purchased retail copies of Bioshock or Fallout 3, I'd gladly pick games like that up as well. Wouldn't have to worry about one breaking and if I ever wanted to go back and try one out again, it'd be right there on my hard drive.

I certainly wouldn't do it for just any game, and deffo not $60 on MW2, but there are some games that are just "great game, wouldn't mind having it as part of a permanently library" sort of deals.

AvP, Modern Warfare 2 on XBL Games on Demand, Bayonetta next week

Feb 18th 2011 12:50PM (Joystiq)
@Hoops So glad this topic came up on Joystiq recently enough for someone to see this comment. I've heard the retailer argument before but what exactly can brick and mortar stores do if MS did this?

The real question that I have though is why won't developers allow their games to be purchased in digital download form from XBL or wherever, day and date with the retail release? At the very least give people the option.

Are MS asking for too much of a cut? Devs and publishers complaining about trade-ins should at least be open to giving people the option of downloading a game at full price (or perhaps $10 bucks less since there's no packaging of disc pressing involved) on release date and being SURE that the product can't be gifted to someone else or traded in to be purchased at a reduced price later on.

At least give the option right?

MDK 2 for WiiWare in certification, new PC version still in the works

Feb 9th 2011 11:42AM (Joystiq)
I never finished this one, but I do remember loving the atmosphere of MDK 2 (have no experience with the first one).

Anyone remember a game called "Armed and Dangerous?" I know it's available on XBL as an Xbox Original, but I wouldn't mind an update from that one as well.

And while we're getting nostalgic, how about some Extreme-G making a FAITHFUL comeback.

New LA Noire screenshots look suspect

@Devilish Styles Time for some Blade Runner or Altered Carbon open-world action now.
