Sony introducing one-time-use online codes with Resistance 3
Jul 6th 2011 3:17PM (Joystiq)He has a little understanding, but not much. While it is true that the devs for PSN games (not sure about live's infrastructure, so I can't speak there) have to front the cost for servers, etc. etc., these little "project $10" isn't a way to cover dev costs but more of a way to take $ from Gamestop and other used resellers. So he's right and wrong.
Let's say I buy the game new and play it online for a full year. The dev gets whatever portion of my $60 to pay for their work + servers + bandwidth, etc. etc. Let's call this value "x".
Now let's say there was no "online pass" and my friend bought new, played for a little bit then sold to 'stop or on craigslist, whatever. Let's say throughout the course of the same year, 4 people played the game and played online. The dev would still get "x" from the initial purchase + $0 for any additional purchase.
With the online pass, the dev now gets x + (4 * y) dollars where "y" is the amount of money the dev gets from the online pass purchase.
So even though the same game is played for the same amount of time on their servers, thus using up the same number of resources, etc. etc. the dev gets more money by having the online pass if the game is ever sold/resold on the used game market; that's it and that's all.

Jul 6th 2011 3:04PM (Joystiq)So by that logic, so much for xbox live being $60 a year? (or whatever the sub fee is)

Jul 6th 2011 2:23PM (Joystiq)(Note: This is based off what I think is reasonable but I've never used GameFly).
From my understanding you can buy the "online pass" or what not for a price. Thus, you rent from GameFly pay $0-10 to play online and there you have it.
Street Fighter X Tekken preview: Cross my heart
Jun 9th 2011 4:36PM (Joystiq)Err defeat all characters! That's what I get for typing after recently looking at switch statements.
Street Fighter X Tekken preview: Cross my heart
Jun 9th 2011 4:35PM (Joystiq)I did have a few complaints but I chalked it mainly up to "early build" bugs.
*As mentioned, a lot of matches timed out.
* If two characters tried to throw each other at the same time, both throws wiffed (this might be intentional but it is really, really weird).
* Some of Nina's moves which were throws in Tekken are now blockable but other throws for King, etc. are not. (I could potentially be just remembering this wrong)
* The launchers and generic launching combos for each character (lp, mp, hp, hp) could be chained twice leading to pretty massive damage for little to no skill. The launcher is a great idea but I'm a little hesitant about launcher after a launcher.
I did love the best 2 out of 3 rounds where a round is dictated by losing 1 character set up much more than the "default all characters". It gave a little more strategy to it IMO.
I can't wait!
PSN to undergo maintenance today
Jun 1st 2011 3:55PM (Joystiq)if it is, then aren't users of XBL getting royally screwed? They have to pay to play online AND pay (roughly) the same price for games from the store?
So, in short, no.
Infamous 2 pre-order bonus powers demonstrated on video
May 11th 2011 5:27PM (Joystiq)Because the first game was great (with some flaws) and there's no reason to believe this one won't be even better. When did that stop becoming a legit reason to buy a game?

May 11th 2011 5:26PM (Joystiq)I mean, I'm not changing my preorder (I love Amazon), but I'm curious
