PSN Tuesday: Final Fantasy 4 Complete, Sonic 2
Apr 19th 2011 9:14PM (Joystiq)Or you know, you could play lots of the other great games on the system too and then you wouldn't feel as if you wasted money.
Top Spin 4 is Move compatible, but 'not Kinect'
Jan 18th 2011 5:40PM (Joystiq)Hrm, I never thought of that but you're right. Can kinect get the rotation of your arms? Having used to play tennis when I was younger, the angle at which you hold your racquet makes a huge different.
Top Spin 4 is Move compatible, but 'not Kinect'
Jan 18th 2011 5:37PM (Joystiq)Yes obviously. I guess my statement was more akin to:
"in the Wii version there is probably some math that takes the relative motion about a center point and the game does something with it".
Assuming that is true, they can take the PS Move data. Calculate the relative motion to the light ball (along with lots of other data on top of that) and reuse the code from the Wii version.
Obviously this is assuming a lot about their code base and code structure, but just in general I think going from "PS Move data" to "motion relative to a central point" may be much easier than "Kinect data to motion relative to a central point." Considering I haven't used any of the SDKs for any of this, I could be talking out of my ass :)

Jan 18th 2011 5:16PM (Joystiq)Kinetic lags too much to be used in hardcore titles, lulz, kkthxbye
Reasonable answer:
Considering they already have a Wii version finished, it may not take that much additional work to translate PS Move data into whatever data the game uses. I could be wrong but I would assume that "Move data" -> "Top Spin Data" functionality would already deal with a lot of the same (though would add additional functionality and math on top of) math that the "Wii" -> "Top Spin" conversion would use.
Joystiq Top 10 of 2010: Heavy Rain
Dec 29th 2010 5:23PM (Joystiq)Well, what makes a game? To me, at a very low level a game is something that, through interaction via player, the overall plot/action changes, thus no 2 'playthroughs' will ever be exactly alike and will bring different feelings to the player.
Now, there are different types of gameplay. Most of the gameplay in games out now involve a lot of physical involvement (can I shoot the enemy fast enough/press the button fast enough/run quickly enough/dodge enough enemy fire) as well as decision making (what do I level up/what attack to use/etc.). I will agree that HR's "physical button pressing" type gameplay isn't terribly complicated or deep, it is still there. I will argue that HR has much more emphasis on the decision making aspects of gameplay.
In *most* games, your decisions really only affect on making the physical button pressing gameplay easier and very rarely alters the overall narrative. If you use a certain weapon/spell then this boss is beaten in 10 seconds instead of 2 minutes because you hit his weak point for MASSIVE DAMAGE. In HR, at least to me, the decision making gameplay aspect affected the narrative more and the button pressing less.
I simply think HR sort of turned most games around. Most games give you lots of choices on what your character does RIGHT NOW. Jump on the turtle, use this item, etc. These choices are fun to do and experiment with but the narrative remains the same. HR to me gave a more limited set of choices to do RIGHT NOW but opened up the narrative more.
That's my take on it at least.
*SPOILERS*
And come on man, you can't honestly expect them to put thoughts into the killer's head which you can listen to to give away the plot early in the game do you? Sure the killer could have been made someone else and this situation could have been avoided but I guess they wanted a plot twist.
Joystiq Top 10 of 2010: Heavy Rain
Dec 29th 2010 5:06PM (Joystiq)Not to me. I had fun investigating scenes trying to see what clues were left behind and the 'finder twister' positions that the game put my hands in were actually kind of fun in a way.
That and the concept of no restarts, no checkpoints to reload from, large character deaths possible was very innovative to me and had nothing to do with the plot. That was a pure game design choice right there.

Dec 29th 2010 4:57PM (Joystiq)I wanna say QD said it shipped like 1.5 million. I may be wrong.
Joystiq Top 10 of 2010: Heavy Rain
Dec 29th 2010 4:55PM (Joystiq)That and the story, plot holes included, was still leaps and bounds better than the majority of other games' plots. When plots for those games (fighting games, mario games, etc.) are discussed, most people just say "only game play matters!" I understand that HR is a more plot driven game than other games (though the gameplay mechanics of twisting your fingers in the strange positions wasn't bad IMO) and thus the story should be better than most other games, but the story IS better than most other games. It's not flawless by any means, I just don't understand the pure amount of hate. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

PSP Go on sale for $150 at Best Buy this weekend
Nov 4th 2010 6:46PM (Joystiq)The issue was that I already have a PSP-2k with extended battery life pack and some UMD games and some UMD movies when the Go was released. Now, since then I've sold my UMD movies and sold most of my UMD games and re-bought as downloads (except Lumintes, the MGS series as I want to keep those).
I would love, love, LOVE to jump on this deal but I don't really have any need for 2 PSPs. Do you guys things there is still a market for a PSP-2k in good condition with the extended life battery, logitech case, and 32 GB memory stick? If so would I get enough for that to cover PSP GO ($150) + 16 GB M2?
I guess I could try selling and find out, I just worry that if I do and it doesn't sell I'll be stuck with a useless (to me) PSP-2k. Bleh :(
