Interview: Assassin's Creed 2 creative director, Patrice Désilets

Jun 11th 2009 12:59PM (Joystiq)
Assassin's Creed was a game I had a lot of fun with and still play on occasion but I really have no desire to defend its faults. It was a great game being weighed down by mediocre and repetitive design and an inconsistent AI. Although I think the fact the producer admits the flags were in there as a joke is hilarious.

One of my main problems with the game is that there wasn't a very much incentive for playing stealthily because the counter system in fights was so easy to exploit and you never really got anything extra if you did sneak up on your target.

I look forward to hearing more about AC2 and I hope it does a lot to improve on the first's shortcomings. I'll probably give it a rent either way.

Assassin's Creed 2 will end with a cliffhanger

Care to elaborate?

Assassin's Creed 2 will end with a cliffhanger

Jun 4th 2009 11:25PM (Joystiq)
"There will be a cliffhanger," he admitted. "It's cool to have a cliffhanger."
Um...No it's not. It's just extremely frustrating and weakens the story that I'm supposed to care about. What's the point of having a story if there's not any resolution? Imagine if after beating the first world of Super Mario Bros and having Toad tell you "The Princess is in another castle" the game ended. That was the ending of the original Assassin's Creed.

"The director feels that players need to experience just a little bit of frustration at the game's completion"
What? This is the stupidest thing I've ever read. If completing the game will frustrate me instead of satisfying me then why the hell would I want to play the damn game?

Activision sues Double Fine over Brutal Legend

Jun 4th 2009 2:58PM (Joystiq)
Activision is hardly washed up. They're one of the most successful game companies out there right now thanks in no small part to business tactics like these as well as exploiting name brands like Guitar Hero despite declining product quality.

I don't like it anymore than you guys but these are the business practices that win.

Activision sues Double Fine over Brutal Legend

This sounds exactly like what happened with Fox, WB and Watchmen a few months back. I wouldn't expect Brutal Legend's release date to actually be affected, this is just Activision looking to get a piece of the pie now that the game is close to release and looks like it could be a success.
To be perfectly honest I'm expecting they'll get exactly what they want.

This is the Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer you're looking for

Jun 1st 2009 8:55PM (Joystiq)
Nice little cinema there. I really loved the KotOR games (even the woefully rushed and incomplete sequel) and this just makes me wish they'd do another sequel as opposed to an MMO. I've tried getting into several MMO's and found that, personally, I just get no sense of satisfaction from the mechanics of the genre. I also think that the genre doesn't lend itself well to storytelling which has been my favorite aspect of the KotOR games.
I'd like for the game to be great but I just have a feeling it won't be for me.

The Beatles: Rock Band intro is our 'Real Love'

Jun 1st 2009 7:38PM (Joystiq)
That intro is superbly done. It's a shame the in-game graphics are closer to the action figure styled characters of the older games than this.
Oh well, as long as one of the stages is actually The Beatles playing on a giant blue elephant I'll be a happy boy.

Mass Effect 2 video shows us the darker side of things

Hmmm, I suddenly have the urge to play through Mass Effect again.

First footage of Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver revealed

May 10th 2009 4:40PM (Joystiq)
Yea, I loved the color palette in Gold and Silver too. One of my favorite touches was the bright yellow glowing windows in buildings while everything else is tinted blue when you play at night.
Also, I know that this is really just Nintendo repackaging the same Pokemon game AGAIN but this hits all the right nostalgia nodes in my brain the same way FireRed and LeafGreen did a few years ago. I can't wait to have my Totodile loyally follow me around.
