The beta and Battlefield 3

I agree that releasing an old, very flawed beta so close to the release of the game is bad strategy. However, the objective of a beta release is not just to kill bugs or to showcase a game. It is in fact to gather feedback on whether the game is suitable for its players.

Battlefield 3 was built upon the premise of taking all the great features of Bad Company 2's multiplayer and merging it with a slightly more arcade kind of game similar to Call of Duty Modern Warfare X. Mechanics from both franchises have been merged in this game but there was the problem, as you mentioned, that maybe it felt more like one than the other, and that's why the beta is so important: so that players can say "you know, this feels a little too fast", or "guys, I liked it better when there was more strategy" and so on. Games like these are built already expecting things to be tweaked - remember Killzone 2's faster aim patch?

You also have to take into account that the PC beta had a different build number - it was closer to the final game than the console versions - and played quite differently already. I played both PS3 and PC versions and I felt the difference in sniper aiming and soldier "toughness", taking more time to die.

In the end, DICE/EA probably got to a certain volume of feedback saying that players wanted the gameplay to be more BC2-like, and the version you played is *not* DICE/EA being all "yay we tricked you in the beta" but "we listened to you and here's a better game" instead.

Remember back when Resident Evil (1) was released and there was that lame live action intro but it was cool because games couldn't be graphically realistic and there was VIDEO playing inside our consoles and it was mind-blowing?

This is like that, but 15 years later, so only the lameness is left.

LOL… For a sniper shot that made an awful lot of noise and took 4 seconds to hit. Also, seeing the bullets actually fly was ridiculous.
