Nyko Zoom for Kinect available now [update]

Sep 16th 2011 6:59PM (Joystiq)
@Enosoma
I really have to question how you installed the Zoom, because I'm sensing a common lament between you and most of the unhappy reviewers at Amazon. I admit that I haven't tried Dance Central or Yourself Fitness yet, but I haven't seen any major issues with the Zoom. Gunstringer, Fruit Ninja, Child of Eden work nearly flawlessly (until my arms get tired and I start flailing around). Plus, my Kinect can easily recognize me. To answer your points:

1) Yes, there is a black circle around you, but don't exaggerate. It doesn't (shouldn't) take up the whole FOV.
2) The floor issue/recalibration is covered in the installation manual. Even amidst all my clutter, the Kinect can see the floor.
3) Try retuning Kinect or use smaller motions.
4) Adjust your lighting or setup facial recognition w/o Zoom first.
5) It works well with most of the Kinect games I've tried.
6) ??? On the floor, a couch or what? Compound lenses can create distortions, you know.
7) I've got nothing. Maybe you're standing too close and it can't see your face.

I also have to question how people are putting this thing on. Nyko gives you the plastic film in the box for a reason. Something tells me that most people are slapping the thing on the Kinect, sliding it around until it fits, and not cleaning their fingerprints off the Zoom lenses.

If there truly are defective units out there, I feel for you. Maybe people are just expecting too much for a $25 plastic accessory?

Five games in development at Epic Games, none from the Gears of War franchise

Aug 16th 2011 5:51PM (Joystiq)
Please tell me that none of the five games will feature Ice-T (or have a lame music video tie-in) -- I'd rather keep Carmine alive! But actually, another Unreal Tournament could be cool...

Nintendo sells 2.2 million DSis, says Walmart is biggest customer

I don't know who I can't stand more: Big Dumbhead Reggie or that red-headed cheerleader that he works with. Blah!

Rumor: Tekken 6 also bundled with 250GB PS3 in Europe

Oct 6th 2009 5:59PM (Joystiq)
Microsoft would be better served to (radically) drop the cost of the hard drive instead of releasing a 250GB bundle. So far, that's the only real advantage Sony has IMHO. The way exclusivity deals are worded these days, you can't always count on one console retaining a specific title. On a similar note, why do people seem to care about these 250GB Sony bundles anyway? Wouldn't it just be cheaper to get a HDD+PS3+whatever game?

Sony: PSP without UMD 'always the plan'

Quick, what does Michael Pachter think! Geez I hate Sony PR-speak! Like PSN has suddenly improved so much that now it can support digital distribution?!

WinFast HPVC1100 is world's first external SpursEngine encoder

May 12th 2009 1:12PM (Engadget HD)
It already is integrated into at least two video cards; one is the Leadtek Winfast PxVC 1100. I can't remember who makes the second, but it runs about $600 USD. They're supposed to be optimized for video encoding with TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress.

GDC09: Why The iPhone Changed Everything

Mar 23rd 2009 6:11PM (Joystiq)
Firstly, I'd argue that the iPhone is "evolutionary", not "revolutionary" since quite a few people are still able to function quite well without it and it borrows heavily from many old concepts/existing devices (albeit with better integration).

Secondly, has this guy really played a lot of iPhone games? They are constantly improving, but the battery life sucks! Give me at least 4 - 6 hours of playtime, then we can talk about the iPhone as a gaming platform.
