Zynga responds to copycat claims, NimbleBit rebuts

Feb 3rd 2012 5:36PM (Joystiq)
Yeah, Pincus isn't kidding here. At Zynga, if you're not developing one of the "golden" games, your game picks off all the other features and mechanics of those staple games as well. Quite literally, on the team I was with the feature set every week was a re-branded clone of one of FarmVille's recently introduced mechanics that happened to be performing ok (typically involving how to more effectively spam your friends and make more viral loops).

The entire company and product teams revolve around cloning mechanics from somewhere else, internal or external. It's shoved down your throat, like it or not, and innovation is not only non-existent, but it's frowned upon, and it comes from the top down.

Zynga CEO defends stock price, says culture 'not ultra competitive'

Jan 17th 2012 5:40PM (Joystiq)
The only reason the attrition rate is so low is because everybody is still hanging around in order to cash out as soon as they can and are vested. True story. His words are misleading, and the culture there is most definitely toxic. Maybe not on all teams, but it is definitely prevalent.

Swype psyched to be on Droid X, fifty total devices by the end of 2010

Jun 24th 2010 6:49PM (Engadget)
I'm a big fan of swype, but the one problem I have is that on the swype keyboard they removed the microphone button, meaning I lose the option of voice to text unless I change the input type. This is a bit of a downer, since I like using Swype in some cases, and voice to text in others.

Data Robotics introduces 5-bay Drobo S, enterprise-ready DroboElite

Nov 23rd 2009 7:42PM (Engadget)
I guess I must be the only one here that loves my drobo. I've been waiting forever for an eSATA version - stoked to see one finally. Certainly nothing to complain about from me....

Apple patent application reveals ad-supported OS, desktop Armageddon

Oct 22nd 2009 1:49PM (Engadget)
How, exactly, is something like this patentable? Software has been ad-supported for about as long as I can remember. Just because it's an OS doesn't make it a new, original idea. More patent abuse....

BBC promises Open Championship in HD next year

Jul 20th 2009 8:08PM (Engadget HD)
Pretty sure Comedy Central is on the hot seat. Seriously, wtf is it with so many of their new shows still not being in HD, plus their second most valuable property (John Stewart)? It's driving me crazy. I cringe watching The Daily Show every night, it's the last standard definition show I watch on a regular basis.

URC debuts MX-5000 universal remote with haptic feedback

Jul 20th 2009 8:04PM (Engadget HD)
My MX-950 looks better than this. While it can be a PITA to program for at times if you don't have top of the line equipment with distinct IR codes, it still does the job very well.

This thing is quite ugly, and no number pad? Sorry, but this seems like a step backwards to me.

HBO, Cinemax coming to Comcast's On Demand Online

Jul 14th 2009 5:59PM (Engadget HD)
Words cannot describe how much I despise Comcrap and their shady tactics. Their services absolutely stink, and the only thing I did like about them, their internet service, started putting traffic caps on their customers late last year, and banning them if they go over it, without providing any way for users to know how much bandwidth they are using. I could go on and on and on with all the ways that I hate this company.

For those of you that have had Comcrap and don't know any other services, you don't know what you're missing out on. Regardless of the lies they tell you, they DO NOT have more HD than the competition (at least, DirecTV, I can't speak for the other satellite providers), they do NOT have cheaper rates, and lord god, I could go ALL DAY LONG on how inferior their DVR product is in every single conceivable way, than the competition.

Surprising no one, StarCraft II fans petition for LAN support

Jul 2nd 2009 4:49PM (Joystiq)
I don't know why people continue to use http://www.petitiononline.com when http://www.thepetitionsite.com is so much better in just about every way.

Red Faction: Guerrilla getting three DLC packs, first coming August 13

Jun 30th 2009 6:13PM (Joystiq)
Am I the only one that's frustrated with all of these companies releasing a game then charging for more downloadable content a couple months later? I can't get past the feeling that we're being ushered into an era of gaming that I really don't want to go to.

So this is how gaming and ownership dies? With thunderous applause.

I'd rather buy the sequel outright in another year when they can do it justice. I just really don't want to buy something that I can't hold in my hand, and resell to someone else.
