iPhone firmware 2.0.2 is out... and angry

Aug 19th 2008 2:26AM (Engadget)
Can someone explain these recurring statements?

"Before the update I had only 2 bars now I have 5!"

"Before the update I had 5 bars and now have none!"

As for call problems...

I've got a Nokia N75 (on AT&T) with many of the same problems that peeps have reported for the iPhone. Calls get dropped with full bars. Calls not going through. Seemingly had similar issues with a Blackberry 7100 on T-Mobile. Sound like an issue with AT&T infrastructure more than the phone's software. Perhaps the iPhone could handle network issues with more grace, but a lousy network is a lousy network. No?

Rock Band gets Clash, Police and Ramones DLC

Feb 12th 2008 4:51PM (Joystiq Xbox)
It doesn't matter if YOU (Mr. Commenter) like the choice of songs - it matters if other people like them.

I'm giving away my age here but I'm fine with Police and Ramones tracks. I grew up with them so they mean something to me - regardless if some pompous commenter feels they're inferior to another performer.

Give us Journey and VH!

Most so-called iPhone alternatives are nothing of the sort

Jun 25th 2007 1:45PM (TUAW.com)
The N95 (and related Nokia S60 3rd Ed phones) do everything the iPhone can do, just differently. The shortcoming is integration which the iPhone appears to do very well - just like most Apple products. Nokia's not asleep at the wheel, however, if you take a look at the newly launched Nokia Media Transfer software.

FWIW, you can load third party software on the N95 and other S60 phones. iPhone's "API" of supporting AJAX is cute but no substitute for in-device (binary) software.

I can see myself getting an iPhone when they offer 3G and aren't locked to AT&T. But until then, Nokia's Symbian-based phones are my choice.

USS Arizona is Wasting Away

Raising a ship is a big undertaking, let alone a large warship. If you can, check out a documentary about raising submerged vessels and you'll see the amount of time and work which goes into it: divers, lift, water conditions.

Could they have cut a hole in the hull to rescue trapped seamen? I don't know the technology at the time. They have the means to rescue submariners because of the airlocks. Not sure about ships.

Connect360 gets an update, works again

May 14th 2007 4:21PM (Joystiq Xbox)
Installed v3.0 from previous... Xbox 360 attempts to play a video files and bounces back with an "unsupported format" error. The same MP4 (H.264) file plays fine from burned data DVD. Haven't tried rebooting everything to see if that kicks something into action.

Connect360 having hiccups with latest update

I use it all the time for MP3 files and the occasional iPhoto album. The ability to stream H.264 vids will be a great addition.

Apple announces Leopard delays due to the iPhone

Apr 12th 2007 6:25PM (TUAW.com)
Please people...who cares if 10.5 is delayed? You'd complain if it came out buggy in June and wish they'd "hurry up and fix it."

Go buy your laptops and stop worrying. No one says you have to buy 10.5 and if you're a student the academic price is around $70 - about half of retail. Apple doesn't owe anyone a "discount" for being late.

I'm as much a Mac fan as the next guy but all this whining is annoying. Worry more that Apple will update your new MacBook right after you buy it.

iTunes 7.1 first impressions

Library update took under 60 seconds on a PowerBook G4 (800 MHz) with 12,762 song library on an external FireWire 400 drive.

The Aftermath of Death at the Georgia Aquarium

Jan 31st 2007 5:37PM (Divester)
Marc, I tend to agree with you regarding the whale sharks. An earlier draft of my post included a comment that some animals may not be the most appropriate for captivity but I removed it.

If you have the chance to save an animal from extinction (an extinction accelerated by man's actions) would you put it on display or let it die off?

The animal in question doesn't want either option but we've become the stewards of our planet so the responsibility falls on us. Perhaps it's the natural progression of evolution and we should let everything runs its course: pollution, climate change, extinction...even human cloning.

But that's not an acceptable solution either.

Disinfecting Your Dive Gear

Jan 24th 2007 11:43AM (Divester)
I've been rinsing my wetsuit for years and it's been holding up quite nicely. If anything, I'd say the BC should get a thorough soaking and drying.
