ESA withdraws support for SOPA

Jan 20th 2012 6:54PM (Joystiq)
Also, the recent takedown of megaupload shows that we don't need SOPA/PIPA/ACTA at all. None of the people involved in megaupload were in the US nor were US citizens, and the US still took it down. Obviously there is already enough in the US's legal arsenal to combat piracy and copyright infringement.

ESA withdraws support for SOPA

With all of this focus on SOPA/PIPA, nobody's paying attention to ACTA, which is just as harmful.

House won't vote on SOPA until 'consensus' reached

There are already laws that protect copyrights, and there are already laws against piracy. SOPA doesn't help protect those any more than they are now, it just adds ways to abuse legitimate site owners, independent content publishers, and users.

Why Final Fantasy XIII just didn't work

Jan 13th 2012 8:45PM (Joystiq)
I actually really liked Final Fantasy XIII. It had an incredible battle system, and I found the story interesting and the characters endearing. Maybe it's because I read all of the logbook entries, but I found things to make a lot more sense than most FF games, and things were more fleshed out and it had focus and direction. The linearity didn't bother me too much because each new area looked fantastic and was completely different than the last. I'm OCD about RPGs and tend to look around every corner, which sometimes leads me to actually get bored with the game because I'm not doing anything interesting. FF XIII kept me moving along and experiencing new things. When things opened up at the end, I had so much invested in the game that I was exploring more for the wonder and enjoyment it brought me instead of the fear that I might have overlooked something important.

XI, and XIV were really the ones that went wrong for me, and X and XII just seemed boring, eccentric, and hackneyed.

IV, VI, IX, and now XIII are my top picks, not necessarily in that order.

Lamar Smith removes DNS blocking from SOPA

Jan 13th 2012 8:34PM (Joystiq)
There are already laws that fight copyright infringement, there is no need for SOPA. DNS blocking is removed from SOPA, but the rest is still there and continues to diminish our rights. SOPA just exists because media companies don't feel they have enough power to enforce their rights. I think they already have too much, such as copyrights that last longer than the artist is alive. It's time to make things a little more balanced, and merely cutting out the most offensive part of the bill isn't enough.

SOPA needs to disappear entirely, as well as any other future bill that pops up in its place to effectively do the same thing. We need laws to protect what we have and prevent media companies from lobbying for laws to be passed in the first place. There should also be laws against politicians from accepting "campaign contributions", they should be accepted as candidates based on their merits and not an expensive crusade, and they should be supported by a foundation of good ideas and voter support, and not piles of cash.

Indie Royale's next bundle available for pre-order, and we have no idea what it is

Too bad there's no Linux support. At least there's Humble Indie Bundle!

Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights Review: Inconsequential Jones

Wow, the in-game models look extremely disappointing compared to the animation. I was expecting that they would look different, but they look like terrible paper models.

Also, what's up with screenshots on Joystiq? No matter which thumbnail you click in the preview, you're always taken to the first image in the set.

Three pros score love on Grand Slam Tennis 2 cover

That's McEnroe? Looks like someone crossed Harrison Ford with Pauly Shore. Nice to see Nathan Drake making an appearance in more games though.

Portabliss: Bug Princess (iOS)

I'm just waiting for a compilation disc for PS3/360 so I can play this on a TV with a gamepad.

I'm happy that these games are available though, and the translation to iOS is amazingly good, especially the control scheme, and I wish the added mode for Deathsmiles was made available on console.

Still, I want to be playing these on a TV.

Deja Review: Tekken Hybrid

@(Unverified) Since they raised the prices of games for this generation... :/ And we're "lucky" to have a $60 price for new games:

If you ask me, $40-$50 was the sweet spot, during the PSX/PS2 years that's how it was.
