Sony under fire for "racist" advertising

Jul 6th 2006 5:44AM (Engadget)
I'll give Sony the benefit of the doubt on this, but although they might not be racist, they are definitely stupid. I don't believe that either of these qualities have proven to be good survival traits.

Developer to raze Bell Labs Holmdel facility, birthplace of the cellphone

Jul 6th 2006 5:16AM (Engadget)
It's a bit late now to say anything about it, as the only people who perhaps had the remotest obligation to preserve it were the original owners. It's totally unrealistic to try and force the new owners to do what *you* want with the site.

As much as I love architecture, it's a sad truth that the site is very much of its time and original purpose, and unfortunately is no longer able to find an appropriate tenant, but is Engadget going to put a bid in to PREI to buy it? I don't think that's going to happen.

The only option now is for anyone who really is interested in the preservation of this place to get a group together and petition the new owners for access to the site so that it can be photographed, documented and (assuming permission can be obtained) objects of historical interest can be retrieved before destruction, all in an organised and methodical manner.

Doing this would be a much more constructive way of keeping the site alive in peoples' memories than a lot of pleading and hand-wringing.

Floor plans, building drawing, blueprints, etc. should also be obtained and scanned in, which shouldn't be too much of a problem as there will be no security implications once the site is cleared.

Sony expects gamers to "Play Beyond" $599 [update1]

I would wait to see what iSuppli say about the PS3 when it comes out, then we can decide if we're being ripped off or not.

Doctor Who's Eccleston regenerates as The Prisoner's Number 6

They'd better have William Shatner as one of the Number 2s, he'll be perfect!

It's such a pity that Hervé Villechaize is dead.

Apple Computer prevails over Beatles' Apple Corps

#18 and #25, thanks. I was just on a break, so I didn't have time to read the ruling. Now that I have, I think the judge made the right call, and it doesn't allow the kind of loopholes that I was alluding to in my first posting. The question came down to whether Apple Computer were branding the media as theirs, or just the ITMS. Cheers!

Apple Computer prevails over Beatles' Apple Corps

Does this mean that the RIAA/MPAA et al can longer sue file sharers, because thay are no longer sharing music or films, only data? In other words, the data that people are sharing no longer comes into the purview of music or film copyright owners. Result: As long the data is not data that has been generated by the copyright holder, then it should be free to spread around as you like.

Oops! Brain training doesn't help aging brains

Apr 24th 2006 5:58PM (Joystiq)
#25, without wishing to be facetious, or without assuming that you were being so, is your presentation of some of the university's work an effort to overturn years of common knowledge that car-accidents are caused by supernatural events such as UFOs, pixies and poltergeists? The idea that even a small proportion of car accidents could be caused by people "not paying attention to the road" is certainly revolutionary!
Next thing you know, they'll be telling us that eating too much and not exercising enough is a major factor in obesity... I guess what we should take from Salthouse's results is that there is no need to go to school, read books, or even do your homework, as it will have no effect on your mental aging.
Perhaps he needs to either do a bit of brain training himself, or work on presenting his results in such a way as to make it seem worthwhile being alive.
Of course, I could always go and read the original article in context, but that would be no fun.

DS vs. PSP: Tic-tac-toe throwdown [Update 1]

Apr 24th 2006 4:58PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Tic-tac-toe? A strange game, where the only winning move is not to play... Is this not the sort of thing that leads us down the slippery slope to global thermonuclear war? for the sake of the children, stop this kind of thing NOW, while we still can!

Brain Age site launches

Apr 16th 2006 1:29PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
You have to try it to realise what the attraction is.

I'm sure many readers have tried reading those books and articles which claim to help you develop your memory, etc. but they're always so dry, and expect you to follow a set path through to the end of the book. I always find myself losing interest, or just not being able to get the theories to work.

Brain Age adds a dynamic element to the whole thing, and has enough variety and humour, plus the goals and methods are set by your own personal progress. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that the handwriting games can be very frustrating (especially the word list) until you get used to the way it expects you to draw your characters.

I would say that I definitely feel a bit sharper, memory-wise, after a few weeks of playing it, and the nice thing is that it is teaching you many of the fundamentals that you learnt when you were a schoolchild, but have since forgotten, even though they're still valid.

You also get to enhance your pattern recognition skills, which is something that is always useful, but never gets used enough in concentrated bursts. I.e. whenever this skill is needed, it's a one-off situation, and while it might take a while to sort it out, you've more than likely solved the problem through brute force rather than logic.

When the Euro version is released I will actually be buying it and a DS-lite for lending to friends, as well getting my own copy.

Oh, and it has probably one of the best implementations of Sudoku I've seen so far, and actually makes it realistic to play it quickly, without all the tedious scribbling and rubbing out (you still have to do that, but as it's digital, it's a lot more convenient).

The touch-screen really shows its worth with this game.
