Missile Game 3D - Today's Time Waster

Nov 23rd 2006 2:31PM (Download Squad)
A fun game. Its one of those that require more reaction and concentration than thought, and is a great concept flash game, whoever made it.

The last one was fun, but it was a little too time consuming.

What I'm thankful for: Gmail

Nov 23rd 2006 2:29PM (Download Squad)
Sadly, i am forced to agree with RG. Gmail often goes down, and since i have come to rely on it, its quite an inconvenience.

It has, however, easily replaced all my other email accounts, having excellent spam filtering (which has got really good as of late..), the conversation view (which i have come to love) and the general snappiness of it all.

I tried windows live mail for a few months, but was positively shocked at the glut of usability problems (unlike gmail, its a true beta). My first experience with it was basically an ad that stretched half the page. genius!

The yahoo beta mail has had a lot of flak for its slow loading times. Cant test that....all I get when i try to switch over is an unhelpful "Can't open mailbox" error...from any computer. Apparently, it cannot work with my uni's NAT based internet service..the only site which cannot, as it seems.

Zune hacked for USB drive use

Nov 23rd 2006 2:20PM (Engadget)
Nah, its just the zune theme for windows xp, which was also featured on engadget sister site downloadsquad recently, i think. An orange and black theme kinda like the royale or royale noir themes. I happen to be currently using it.

PSone games on PSP: $5.99 to $10.99

Nov 23rd 2006 2:02AM (Joystiq)
An excellent idea with some poor implementation. I have no plans to buy a ps3 till it builds up a decent game library and irons out the bugs which are always present in the first editions. That means i cannot get ps1 games for my psp? what twisted logic is that?

that said, teh pricing is decent. Highly successful titles like ff7 etc would probably be $10, while others would occupy the lower bracket. Its a better deal imho than nintendo's high price for even the crappiest legacy games.

Of course, ps1 games are still available quite easily, but it helps if you have a craving for an old hit and then find taht you can just download it and play it instead of going out hunting.

Microsoft threatens to cripple pirated Vista PCs

Oct 5th 2006 4:00AM (Download Squad)
The funny thing is, thanks to msoft's dominance in the field, people who want to use a computer will have to pony up money for their OS no matter what. Its not much of a choice, seeing how linux is only for the tech minded and has low software support, while Mac OSX is hardware restricted.

One cannot keep using Xp for long, as soon, MS will end support and new devices coming in and all will make XP useless. I would say ms's actions are justified in halting piracy, but isnt this a case of the pot calling the kettle black? MS will take your money whether you like it or not.

Plus, i absolutely hate my privacy invaded. I dont want my OS calling redmond ever so often, or even more invasive procedures. They only harm the actual users and not the pirates themselves (drm anyone?).

Kutaragi on Sony's competition: "We don't care." [update 1]

Sep 30th 2006 2:00AM (Joystiq)
particularly for us rpg lovers, 2006 has been a great year for the PS2, with so many great games like silmeria, shearts 3, xeno 3 etc coming out and more like ff12 and tales of the abyss still to come. And this is just a small fraction of the number launched in Japan. I am not surprised at kutaragi's confidence, in japan atleast, as the 360 despite its TGS showing, is rather pathetic in that regard.

That said, Sony relaly needs a kick in the arse for its incredibly bad PR dept. I do not call joystiq bised for its stream of negative ps3 articles, just simply frustrated by the uniformly crappy PR efforts of the company.

TGS: Blue Dragon = Dragon Quest + Chrono Trigger + Grandia

Sep 21st 2006 12:01AM (Joystiq)
I saw the gameplay video, and was greatly disappointed. Is this the succesor to such games as Chrono trigger and Cross? It seems to have a rather lame fighting system, much like every other cookie cutter rpg out there, and i was underwhelmed by its graphics, i can think of current gen games which look prettier. Lost odyssey looks much, much better than this.

Toriyama's art is decent, though I am not a fan of it, but that is not what made CT that great. In the original CT, you never get to see more than the sprites and the incrediblyu small character portraits for all the characters. Its the great gameplay mechanics and the fun story which draws you in. Blue dragon, however, seems to atleast forego the gameplay part. Which kills a lot of the game for me.

Wii not even remotely region-free

Sep 16th 2006 12:25AM (Joystiq)
I was incredibly pleased at the prospect of region free games for the Wii, as being as it is, the Wii would have relatively limited support for software makers, like the gamecube, because it will take a lot of effort to port games to the Wii.That means a dearth of titles.

However, Japan would have most probably gotten a ton of quirky and fun games (just look at the japanese DS lineup), and it would have been fun to play them. Then this happens.

Seriously, i am disappointed. First they increase the price just enough so that it drops off many gamer's lists as a secondary console (many would still buy the Wii, but those who were looking at it as a secondary console will now think twice). The they set ridiculous prices for the Virtual console games ($5 for a freaking NES game? $8 for a snes game? Has not nintendo flogged the dead horse enough? Xbox arcade had new and original games at this price, and i am not interested in buying old nes and snes games at such outrageous prices.)

Will ad supported music downloads work?

Sep 14th 2006 3:34PM (Download Squad)
Considering the alternatives for getting free songs (for most of us anyway)are shady internet sites or p2p software, this is not a bad deal at all. If i only have to listen to a 90 second ad once, for a track i want, then sure. My main concern is whether there will be any drm associated with it....as that would kill the deal for me. It irks me that pirates can play the songs anywhere, be it on their phones as ringtones or any other conceivable device, while i have to do crap like authorization and live with limitations on my purchased music.

Sony's PRS-500 e-book reader in the wild

Sep 13th 2006 6:13AM (Engadget)
manekineko, as this book contains the eInk technology, it will have incredible battery life and could be used without a backlight (though it might have one for night reading). That alone easily makes up for it not having a color screen. Its an ebook, how many novels out there have color illustrations? I do not want it to be a photo viewer or something, and i would prefer black and white with high contrast over color anytime for this use.
