AT&T to throttle speeds for some unlimited data users
Jul 30th 2011 2:31AM (TUAW.com)Using the resources that we should be allowed to.
Data usage doesn't block 911 calls and it doesn't soak up an ATT towers cell coverage.
It's a different address on the tower and I won't be guilted or bullied in slowing my use. I hit nearly 10 GB last month.
What did I do? Streamed audio while at work, watched video at the gym. Enjoyed listening to Radio Soulwax's app repeatedly wherever I went.
I hate that ATT thinks they can't support us. I may use more bandwidth than you or someone else with a limited plan, but I'm still a paying customer.
And I didn't accept a Multibillion dollar subsidy from the govt to expand MY network and then do as little as possible and call it an upgrade. Nope. Not me.
Pay through your iPhone camera with card.io
Jun 24th 2011 1:32AM (TUAW.com)The convenience of Square is that credit swipes can be done at a swiped rate. I know just by looking at this, these are going.to get processed at card not present rates so I can't imagine a retailer is going to prefer this unless they get a great rate on their transactions in total.
Moreover, I think the consumer is not going to want to take photos of their card to authorize the payment. The phone may not store the number, but the consumer will have no idea where the numbers are going. I know there's going to be some crazy high PCI compliance in place but I don't think it's worth the investment unless you want to have to coddle your customers into trusting you. A lot of people still dont know that a scanned check image is as legit as an actual paper check, and I know that would make plenty of people nervous just hearing that news.
Ten WYSIWYG HTML editors for Mac OS X (Updated)
Jun 16th 2011 3:01AM (TUAW.com)Instead I offer that anyone looking into making a website look intO one of the many free content management systems.
Wordpress, Drupal, and Joomla are three very competent and user friendly platforms. I use Joomla myself and I think it's great.
Given that nearly any browser has a code view these days, you can learn the fundamentals and easily and quickly create content and feature rich websites very quickly.
Wordpress is practically known for ease of use.
Best of all, a majority of these systems come with little to no cost. Imagine that. Creativity software with out any of the financial pain. :-)
How iTunes Match solves my obscure downsampling problem
Jun 12th 2011 2:18AM (TUAW.com)Admit you're an audiophile and it gets better.
If you're going to the process of double ripping your music, you're no where fringe, you're in country knee deep in the s#*t.
It's okay to like nice things, but don't bemoan your personal issues and resolve of iTunes in the face of saying that you're better than some guy who drops coin on a soundproof listening room or has a line of credit at Bang and Olufsen.
It just makes it easier for others to empathize.
Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me stream my music
Jun 3rd 2011 11:45AM (TUAW.com)A bonus is that all the audio loaded in the Mac at home is accessible on the web too through Audiogalaxy's website.
You only have to download the server app for your desktop, doesn't conflict with my AirVideo DLNA streaming either.
I used to use ORB for video and audio but was consistently underwhelmed with support and ability of the application.
HP chooses USB 3.0 over Thunderbolt
May 17th 2011 12:42PM (TUAW.com)HP has to buy their motherboards from vendors who have integrated features. Obviously the value proposition is that the cost to integrate Thunderbolt into their motherboards hasn't reached a saturation point worth investing in yet.
Freakin... How long after FireWire got introduced did it take to showup as a built in feature of high end motherboards for PC builders? 2004-2005?
Before then you had to buy a 3rd party PCI card.
I mean, did none of you notice how many iMacs and MBP's ship with eSata ports? Those are on nearly all PCs now. Where were the built in SCSI plugs on the Mac Pro? It's an add in. Guys. Don't freak out because Apple picked a bleeding edge tech that PC manufacturers won't integrate for years. SCSI and eSata never took a hit for lack of inclusion. In fact, many people that used the hardware needed external controllers to manage the resources of the data adequately.
I can't begin to recall all the people who wanted video storage and would ask me to use the on board PATA Promise controller. Nevermind that it would share the bus with their FireWire or their analog capture card. No... The slowdown they'd see in use would justify the need for external cards. PCs have not changed guys.
Anyone wanting good Thunderbolt performance would seek out an external controller anyway on a PC. Trust me... Just cause we have something nice that's integrated doesn't mean that the PC world won't use it. Heck, if it's as fast or faster than the old Fiber channel cards expect to see some wide adoption in enterprise. It'll be around for years if this plays out.
Comparing the old iMacs with today's new models
May 3rd 2011 2:49PM (TUAW.com)I really wish they had a wireless keyboard with a number pad, but I can do without.
I just need the Back to School promotion to start soon and we're getting a new computer.
The iPad's effect on rival companies' CEOs
Apr 1st 2011 2:01PM (TUAW.com)And that super-tiny Android tablet marketshare is going to look really dour to any executive.
Not that Androids marketshare won't grow, but with the half baked launches of two pieces of hardware from Samsung and Motorola, it's looking like a risky proposition.
Good luck to Asus on their Windows 7 slate.
World Backup Day: 1 TB hard drive giveaway from OWC
Mar 31st 2011 11:44PM (TUAW.com)So, I managed to save my system completely with that Time Machine backup. Took 6 hours to run, then restored it in 90 minutes and bam, just like brand new.
Verizon prices first-gen iPads to move
Mar 25th 2011 10:06AM (TUAW.com)If I had kids, they'd be getting these. They're a bargain considering the whole package you get at 40% off normal price.
Honestly... At $300, I'm willing to wait until next year when the iPad 2 goes on sale for that price and snap one up while people scramble for the iPad 3. Whatever goes into the 3rd iteration will be great I'm sure, but... 40% discounts are 40% discounts.
