December NPD: hardware sales push industry to new heights

Jan 11th 2007 11:34PM (Joystiq)
Why do people tout sales figures to say one thing or the other is "better"? Pyschonauts sold pretty poorly, but was still very good and innovative.

MS considering games for Zune

Dec 21st 2006 4:04PM (Joystiq)
I don't see how games would be all that viable on the Zune besides top-down shooters and the simpler XBLA games. Not exactly a platform for original content. The eventual Xbox Live Arcade integration sounds nice, though. Zuma, Galaga, Doom, Hexic, and Bejewelled 2 would be pretty nice on the DAP. Wi-Fi multiplayer would be great. Coming from someone who actually HAS a Zune rather than just echoing other peoples' opinions about it, I look forward to what Microsoft has in store for it. I can't wait.

Walmart's Zunes, now with more porn?

Dec 20th 2006 5:40PM (Engadget)
Had they just plugged it into the girl's computer, the Zune software would have immediately erased all of the content previously on the Zune and synched it up with her library, if the porn wasn't the girls' in the first place. "No mom, I didn't download that! It was already on there! Honest!"

First online Wii game uses game-specific friend code

Dec 18th 2006 7:05PM (Joystiq)
Besides the interesting Mii feature, there is nothing "We" about the Wii. Friend Codes go against everything the Wii is about. It's complicated, it's cumbersome, and it hampers the gaming experience. Having Wi-Fi enabled out of the box should indicate at least SOME desire from them to create a communal worldwide atmosphere. But they just don't have it or are too arrogant to see that unique usernames and cohesive matchmaking are the real way to making customers happy and providing a true "Wii" experience.

Playstation Online for the PS3 is decent enough, but in the console arena Xbox Live is king. If Nintendo doesn't wake up, then it will remain to be.

Video: PS3 hardware up-close and personal

Dear god is that thing gorgeous. Even more monolithic than the PS2, but it just exudes the "Not for Kids" feel. Really, really slick. The Spiderman font looks really nice on it, actually.

Metareview - Splinter Cell Double Agent (Xbox 360)

Oct 21st 2006 12:19AM (Joystiq)
Chaos Theory was better. Some of the graphics in this game are bland, and the load times are aggravating. The pacing, controls, and how the story is presented are all lackluster and just aren't really up to the level set by Chaos Theory. Good, but not great.

Wired reports on Gizmondo's high-speed crash-up

Oct 5th 2006 11:25AM (Joystiq)
It's really sad that the Gizmondo crashed as terribly as it did. While they did make some absurd business decisions, such as announcing the Gizmondo Widescreen prior to the US release of the Gizmondo, and other executive folleys, at its core it was a really fun machine. Near-final and final versions of Colors, an entirely-camera controlled puzzle game called Agaju, Catapult, Carmageddon, Conflict Vietnam, Alien Hominid, and others have been released, and were surprisingly pretty good.

The launch titles weren't the best by any means, but where they were going with the Gizmondo was really innovative. The gyroscopic functionality provided by the camera was actually very intuitive and accurate for such a small 0.3mp VGA camera. The GPS was fairly responsive as well, and various homebrew efforts have also given the Gizmondo the ability to run raw Windows CE programs and even TomTom. All in all, a great device.
