Apple to hold iPhone 4 press conference this Friday

They are probably going to blame everyone else (their partners, their competitors, their customers) except themselves.

"Apple always works hard to give the customer the best possible technology and user experience, but unfortunately the actions of others have lead to this situtation blaablaabla"

Finland the first country in the world to make broadband access a legal right

Jul 1st 2010 2:43PM (Engadget)
@smartin007

It's not free. You still have to buy the subscription from an internet operator, and currently the prices are actually going up and the service getting worse since the operators are collecting all those thousands of miles of copper lines from the forests and replacing them with wireless shit.

Actually Finland has one of the lowest population densities in the world, so the infrastructure is not cheap at all.

I don't even buy that 1mbps for every citizen crap, because it just means that if every populated area is even theoretically covered with lets say a wireless service that can theoretically reach that speed, then that's sufficient enough for the lawmakers. We all know what kind of crap theoretical wireless speeds are.

A hundred megabits for everyone by 2015? Just not gonna happen. Maybe in 2020, if even then...

CE-Oh no he didn't!: Nokia's Anssi Vanjoki thinks cameraphones are about to make SLRs obsolete

Apr 21st 2010 11:44AM (Engadget)
The human eye has nice capabilites even though it's small and clearly doesn't have the best possible optics.

Nokia has long been investigating methods of implementing the same processes that play key role in creating the human/animal vision system, but digitally. Much of this has to do with realtime processing of the sensor data that is acquired.

So we are not necessarily talking about implementing CMOS type of array and superior optics, but more like some sort of an adaptive and active sensor array and very, very clever software. I know for some certainty that Nokia is interested in technologies that have to do with capturing the electromagnetic wavefront of visible light in some very intelligent way, possibly discarding the need for quality optics.

Of course I have no idea what Anssi Vanjoki had in mind when he made the comment, but I would assume (and hope) it was something along the lines what I just wrote.

Entelligence: What's the future of Nokia?

Dec 1st 2009 6:08PM (Engadget)
Nokia is more than just the mobile phones they make. Nokia is the size of a small country. They produce 500 million devices a year. They have access to every far corner of the Earth. They offer services to people of every colour and language. A corporation simply doesn't get any more global than Nokia.

I'm not saying they can just stop making mobile phones and start doing something else while still remaining one of the largest companies in the history of mankind. Not at all, but they will ultimately change their business concept if that's necessary.

So comparing 1996 Apple, a rather small and struggling software and computer manufacturer with something the scale and flexibility of Nokia isn't valid. Nokia isn't driven by a single goal or an idea, like Apple.

Nokia is all about long term growth, long term value, stability, endurance. I've said it before, and I say it again; I would love to see Nokia turning to some new technology like they did with cell phones during the early 90's.

Nokia sues LCD manufacturers for alleged price fixing (update: joins AT&T)

@Thomas

Sure it's true that Nokia's market share is sliding, margins are a bit down and so on, but why do you have to force this into almost every Nokia related article you post? It doesn't add any relevant information to the news story itself. It's all beginning to feel a bit constrained.

Yes I know it's kind of lame to whine about these things since this is in essence a website which feeds from the reader-writer interaction and personalities with different styles are essential, but hey still, if you can find a way to tone down the attitude even a bit it might help to improve this already great gadget blog. At least from an European point of view. Or maybe not. Whatever. This site still gets my vote for the blog of the decade.
