Blu-ray sales up 700%, edge into a lead over HD-DVD

Jan 13th 2007 4:40AM (Joystiq Playstation)
"We don't need dual-format players, trust me. Blu-ray has NO SHOT of losing this war. HD-DVD is backed by Microsoft, Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, Intel, and Universal. BluRay is backed by (deep breath), Apple, Dell, Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Walt Disney, Paramount, TDK, Hitachi, LG, Lionsgate, Buena Vista, Fox, MGM, HP, the list goes on and on."

And you tried to tell us not to let Microsoft fool us? Not only did you leave the HD-DVD list incomplete, but companies like Paramount support both formats. Where's Warner Bros., New Line, Weinstein, and HBO (and even I'm missing names)? I'm surprised you can even count Samsung and LG, considering they're working on dual-format players. Or how about listing the fact that Walt Disney is looking into HD-DVD.

It's sad that you have to be this ignorant this early. DVD will last AT LEAST until 2010. Not only that, but HDTVs still aren't common. There's no reason to purchase either, and if it comes down to a battle of attrition, the high costs of BD and Blu-ray players will cause the format (as a whole) to collapse.

P.S. There are currently 51GB HD-DVDs being created.

Rumor: MS has purchased Capcom

Jan 13th 2007 12:32AM (Joystiq Xbox)
I'm no fan of the PS3 (as you can tell from my blog), but come on. Losing DMC4 is a death-blow to the PS3? Aside from the PS3 already being a bust, completely scrapping DMC4 (and tons of other PS3, Wii, DS, and PSP games) would be a death-blow to Capcom. Unless Microsoft is going to cover all that money, Capcom would never go for it. Not unless they wanted to collapse.

Sony's not to blame for SIXAXIS/DualShock Emmy nonsense, okay?

No offense, but isn't that, in itself, a "pity me" rebuttal?

Sony's not to blame for SIXAXIS/DualShock Emmy nonsense, okay?

Jan 11th 2007 4:10PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I'm just surprised it took this site this long to spin this "mishap". I don't think anyone is saying Sony lied. I think just about everyone is in agreement that they jumped the gun. Nevertheless, to say "Sony's not to blame" is stupid. You didn't hear Nintendo come out boasting about the Emmy award-winning Wiimote. In fact, you didn't hear anything from Nintendo.

It's just another award that most consumers (and people in general) could care less about. Which makes this whole thing even worse. Sony tried to hype up the SIXAXIS controller by using some award no one cares about, and in the end, they were wrong.

Sony didn't lie, but they did jump the gun. The fact that anyone is trying to put the blame elsewhere is just lame. They weren't misled. They simply didn't use their heads. Sony, in all forms, has been to CES before. They know how things work. Sony did the misleading (accidental or not is irrelevant).

"When Sony was given the Emmy for "technological innovation for device controller", they were slightly befuddled since the SIXAXIS had yet to really show off its mad skills,"

I think this proves my point. If something is clearly NOT right...then it's not right.

GameStop pulls out creative stops to move PS3s

"That photo seriously look photoshopped. The sign is like completely out of place and look as if someone just dropped that in using MS Paint."

Yeah, because the tape that's pressed exactly how it would be in reality doesn't say otherwise [/sarcasm]. Or how about the fact that people are willing to give out the name of the place the store is in, city name, etc.

BioShock not headed back to PS3

Dec 31st 2006 4:40PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I think the real story here is the fact that people are trying to boast about the competition losing an exclusive...and the game it may lose isn't that great. I understand it's a personal opinion, but damn. A year after it comes out, no one is going to care about BioShock.

Heaven forbid some (not all) of you people boast about something that's proven to be a good game. Like Oblivion. The hype for that coming to the PS3 sure died.

Reassessing Nintendo's "no game drought" policy

Dec 20th 2006 1:25PM (Joystiq)
I don't think I've ever seen so many freak out over a rumor. Not only that, but I know plenty of people who don't own Zelda (I don't, and I never will), but they love the games out for the Wii. Just because it's not Mario or Metroid, people tend to think it's the end of the world. Excite Truck, Madden, and even Monkey Ball are pretty good games. It's the quality of the product, not the quality of the name. Case-in-point, Super Mario Sunshine.

There's a lot of hypocrisy going on (and I'm not trying to bash commentors, I mean just in general). People despise rushed games, but they bitch when games they want don't come out exactly when they want them. Not everything can be within the launch window. If they could, there'd be a drought for quite a long time afterward. Furthermore, for those people complaining about lack of third-party titles, stop complaining about rumored delays. Even if this were true, the delays allow third-party games to make a big splash on the Wii. What happens when some new title hits the console, it's an outstanding game, but it gets squashed by the release of MP3? No good game should ever be ICO'd.

To be entirely fair, people shouldn't be implying that Nintendo is always 100% correct on what they say either. I generally despise companies who lie and deceive (Sony right now). That being said, if a game like MGS4 didn't meet the launch window that Sony were to predict, I don't think I'd be mad. Same goes for KillZone. Every company either lies, or makes a statement far too early. Nintendo is no different.

TIME magazine deems PS3 a bust

Dec 19th 2006 12:45AM (Joystiq)
"The PS3 did have a bad launch, but most people don't buy game systems on launch anyways."

That statement is irrelevant, considering that every console at launch is sold. It's not that most people don't. Most people CAN'T. Furthermore, the PS3 had a bad launch because of the poor numbers. After slashing their launch figure a few times, they still failed to meet their small goal. They didn't have a bad launch because people decided not to buy them (if that's what you were implying).

"It being expensive is a valid point, but what system HASNT HAD A LAME LAUNCH."

The Wii?

"Come to think of it, there is normally only one game worth having on any launch."

It's been over a month, and there's still only one game worth having on the PS3.

"...obviously its going to change eventually. The PS2 also had severe shortages, but it didnt matter at all in the long run."

And what makes it so obvious? The PS2's success? The PS2 wasn't $500, and it never had a head-to-head launch with a console that's half the price (and more anticipated), let alone a console with a year head-start AND great graphics (to which some PS3 games can't even match).

"Im just getting tired of the complaints about things that tend to work themselves out anyway."

Like the price? If the PS3 is going to last 2 full generations, then don't expect a price drop any time soon. That being said, the 360 is not only far ahead of the PS3 in terms of sales, but it'll drop in price long before the PS3 does. Complaints are always going to appear. However, there's so many complaints that I fail to see how you can just write them off as no big deal.

I'm sure Sony wishes demand would work itself out. Currently eBay sellers are making more money on Wii consoles than PS3 consoles.
-------------------------------------

"But in life what you WANT and what you GET are two different things.

Kind of like how everyone wanted a $300 PS3 and 6 million by the end of the year, but what we got was $500-$600 PS3s and a few hundred thousand by the end of the year.

Okay, that last part was just rude on my part. I couldn't help myself.

Konami: "MGS4 is exclusive to PlayStation 3." Us: "!"

Dec 19th 2006 12:17AM (Joystiq)
"You 360 fucks will never get MGS4 unless you get a PS3. And everyone's gonna have a PS3 except for the lowliest Wii60 fanboys. Everyone always does get a PS console.
You won't get it a year later, because it will sell well on the PS3."

I hope you're aware of the hypocrisy in that entire post. Anyway, I consider myself unbias. I've played all three consoles, I've read all the news and the specs. That being said, I think to completely rule out MGS4 for the 360 is just as stupid as guaranteeing it's port arrival. As I said, I've read all the news. Which means I read the article about developers failing to make a profit, because the hardware-to-software ratio is horrible. Not only that, but just because MGS4 will sell well for the PS3, doesn't necessarily mean much when there aren't many PS3 units out.

Kojima can deny all he wants, but let's face reality. Kojima Productions is owned by Konami, and just like every other business, they need to make money. If they barely squeeze out a profit on the PS3, you can bet on seeing a port. Kojima may not want to do it, but contrary to popular belief, he's not the boss. Unless he writes the paychecks, he has to fall in line with every other Konami employee.

I understand there's a respect level with Konami and Kojima, but if Hideo means what he says, then he and his superiors may have a clash that Kojima simply can't win.

It's all a bunch of "what if" scenarios at this point, but somewhat educated guesses (I'm not genius, trust me) shouldn't be ruled out.
