Small correction: The Torchlight MMO won't be a Pay-for-Premium-Content service, all the content will be available to anyone who plays, and no one has to get locked out of areas/classes/etc because they haven't paid. They will sell cosmetic and social items only, so nothing that makes other people feel like there are unfair advantages. Otherwise, good article.

@Jacksy Nope, Torchlight was originally a side-product of the MMO's development, with PW funding the MMO, but it sold so well they started to put their own profits into it as well. PW is still the main source of funding anyways

Here are my thoughts on the subject: Runic wants to put out another game before the MMO, but doing so would mean PW wouldn't make much off of them in the meantime. To make sure they have plenty of profits coming in, PW purchased most of the shares of Runic Games stock available, so that when they release an expansion or sequel before the MMO, PW will still make money as that stock grows in value.

Couple things the article doesn't mention: There is no multiplayer, but that is because the MMO in the same world is set to be released 18 months later (with testing phases long before that), and the game ships with the developer's tools to allow for easy modding, so people will be able to do anything to the game they want. Apparently a couple clicks can make every monster a bloody exploding bath of particle effects.

The bit about the Shadow Worm is wrong too, it should be Shadow Armor. Kevin Green (one of the devs) said so here:
