I came here expecting to see manbabies crying about this despite the fact that they've also been constantly bitching about a release date since the beta program went public.
There are occasions where a JRPG doesn't need a fantastic story. You've pointed out Etrian Odyssey, which is a fantastic game that is light on story.
There are occasions where a JRPG absolutely MUST have a fantastic story. In the case of FFXIII, the developers were claiming that the reason that the game is effectively a hallway simulator with random battles is that it is hard to tell a good story in a non-linear game. Which is complete bullshit for a couple of reasons. The first being that Square itself has done it on numerous occasions before Final Fantasy XIII. The second being that the story in Final Fantasy XIII is trite and wholly uninteresting.
Bottom line: If you know the story is going to be the main reason people are playing your game, you should really, really try to make sure that it isn't a complete let down. And if the story does happen to be batshit stupid, try not to call attention to the fact that the gameplay suffered in order to make the moronic story the focus of your "masterpiece".
Wait a minute, wait a minute, let me get this straight...
If Square Enix releases GAMES, they make MONEY? Whatever happened to their strategy of releasing old screenshots and being coy with release dates, all the while bitching about how the games market is in the shitter?
(Seriously, Wada is an idiot and they should have lever let Sakaguchi leave the building.)
If Konami had plans to market its game outside of Japan, I could see there being a problem. However, one game is an indie platformer that (with all due respect) probably won't receive widespread recognition. The other is a game in a genre that, outside of Japan, is about as niche as they come and will likely never be considered for release in western territories. In this case, I doubt that any sort of dispute would be very likely or even result in any sort of gain for Konami.
This is so that people who have agreed to the annual pass are not dissuaded from buying the Diablo 3 collector's edition if they were already inclined to do so.
