Joyswag: PS3 Holiday Games Bundle

Dec 20th 2009 3:07PM (Joystiq)
I haven't been either. But I've been naughty to my PS3...only using it a handful of times this year.

NPD chronicles 100K debut for Riddick's Assault on Dark Athena

May 16th 2009 12:15PM (Joystiq)
I really like the parts of Butcher Bay I played, but by the time I got to it the 360 was already out. I'm really interested in playing this remake and sequel, but I know I don't have enough time for it.

I guess the upside is that if it's not selling well, it will go down in price faster. I'm done playing fully price and then not end up playing it until it costs $20. LOL

Harmonix CEO confirms Rock Band's Xbox 360 bundle guitar is wired

Sep 9th 2007 1:59AM (Joystiq)
I have two wired 360 controllers and two wireless PS2 controllers. We mostly play the PS2 for GH1 and Encore...and that's a rarity. In general, we like the response of the 360 controllers better.

Overall, I don't think it matters all that much. I certainly won't be buying the PS3 version just because it has the wireless controllers. XBL and the players in my friend's list are far more important.

However, I am surprised they didn't just make a bluetooth dongle for the 360 since that's probably what the PS3 controllers will use (minus the dongle).

Sony sends out 'Lair Reviewer's Guide' -- Must. Not. Laugh.

Sep 7th 2007 6:19PM (Joystiq)
I'm sorry...but that video just made the game seem really lame. It hurts more than helps I think. I'm left thinking I want to play my PS3 even less than I already do, which is near impossible.

Every single time motion controls are implemented on the PS3, I cringe. I don't want to shake and move the controller around just because a developer had to force motion controls in. There's no need for it whatsoever. It doesn't make it more immersive; it's mostly an annoyance *thinks of shaking off enemies in RFoM*. We'll see it again in Heavenly Sword with the arrow aiming. Enough already...we don't care about motion controls on non-Wii consoles.

Anyway, I'm doubtful that anyone is surprised by Sony's pathetic antics at this point. They try too damn hard, which is what most of their problem is. Just get games on the damn console and stop trying to repair failures when it's too late, Sony!

Sony downplays Lair critics

Sep 7th 2007 2:44PM (Joystiq)
Motion controls just don't function well with games not centered around them. Even the Wii games have spotty response most of the time (yes, even in MP3). If motion controls were perfect, they would be a lot of fun (even if they are inefficient).

Lair looked really pretty, but the premise of the gameplay didn't seem all that enthralling. I'm glad the Gamestop employees couldn't convince me to reserve it after reading the reviews. Maybe Lair's is great to a console that's desperate for games, but overall, not so much?

Molyneux: Xbox Live 'far more impactful' than Wii waggle

Sep 6th 2007 1:50PM (Joystiq)
I still can't shake the feeling that the Wii is a gaming "flash in the pan". This may not be the case for the target consumer that doesn't care all that much for gaming...just for brief non-hobbyist entertainment.

Also, I believe the subject is "gaming", not the the non-gaming consumer. So in that context, I believe he's right. XBL has done a lot more for me and gaming than any other console or controller.

The ability to have access to a ridiculous amount of content made the difference for me [with XBL]. The community aspect is astounding, leaving a gamer feeling a higher participation level in their hobby.

I'm not surprised that the Wii controller wore thin quite quickly on me. When it comes to non-party-games, the controller doesn't really stick in my opinion. They did well on Metroid Prime 3, but after several minutes, it doesn't really make it any more immersive. It seems to become more of a tedium IMO.

In the end, it's just a different scheme to do the same thing. Kind of like Devorak vs QWERTY keyboard layouts. Devorak is hardly revolutionary, although there are benefits. Importantly, the keyboard layout itself doesn't change the core function of the PC.

PS3 gets firmware 1.92 [update]

Sep 4th 2007 11:06AM (Joystiq)
With Bioshock and Metroid Prime 3 out...why the hell would I even turn on the PS3?

Around these parts, something is wrong if that thing is EVER on. We've missed several updates since launch, if that says anything. From the looks of it, the next important update won't be until HOME is ready. Hopefully it's more entertaining than dinking around on for a few minutes.

Tiger Woods 08 demo now on Live

Aug 28th 2007 5:45PM (Joystiq)
Tiger Woods is the only EA Sports game I enjoy.

Honestly though...I never got around to doing anything in Tiger 06 or 07 on the 360. Not enough courses in the former, not enough motivation for the latter.

I even tried the Wii version of 07...horrible waste of money. I was better off with Super Swing, which isn't saying much. When's the Wii going to get a solid golf game?

I'm hoping I can finally settle into 2008 for the 360. Better check out the demo. Or just hit the course for real...that would be nice for once.

LGC07: Nintendo booth tour reminds us we're not the target audience anymore

Aug 27th 2007 7:22PM (Joystiq)
I don't see what the problem is, and I think some commenters are over-reacting. It's easy to be disappointed with Nintendo's anti-exciting efforts. They are moving to sway an unexperienced audience, which leaves us bored in the back of gaming 101 classes.

I hate to say it, but the Wii just hasn't been much of a gaming console since it came out. Sure, family and friends love it for get-togethers...but thus far it hasn't had much going for it aside from Wii Sports (which isn't much fun anymore). The problem is exacerbated if you regularly play a 360 and/or PS3, which have a lot more games to show.

It's hard to imagine the situation getting any better either.

Joystiq interviews BioShock's Ken Levine about success and harvesting Little Sisters

Aug 24th 2007 7:01PM (Joystiq)
You would think that it's a bigger deal that the game depicts children drinking the blood of corpses more so than making said vampiric children disappear into a mist (aka harvesting). A little funny to me...

Not so funny: imagine the disease spreading of that idea...blood of a thousand corpses...yuck.

The game is excellent in any case.
