Women's Health Mag: Grab your man's joystick

Jan 15th 2007 9:56AM (Joystiq)
My boy and I play a little bit of everything. He kicks my ass in Smash Bros, I kick his ass in Halo, we co-op superhero games. We play a lot of soul calibur. Advance Wars is our newest game of choice. Also there's a lot of separate but together gaming, He'll play FF12 while I play something on my DS, or we each lie in bed playing different DS games. And the classic, we can always fall back on Tetris.

Protecting adults from children online

Well disregarding the limited view of the constitution whoever posted that people who think that every 11 year old playing M rated games misunderstands the point of the ESRB is both correct and incorrect. On the one hand, yes the point of ratings systems is to give parents a guide with which they may choose what is an is not appropriate for their kids. On the other hand it does not give a license to kids to participate in M-rated activities in a public forum. Children whose parents feel they are mature enough to watch R rated movies are more than welcome to take them to those movies provided they accompany them. The real point of rating systems is to allow parents to supervise their children. So unless a parent is supervising their child's use of M Rated games in the public sphere no I don't think they should have the right to play online. And even if their parents are supervising them I think there should be some sort of stricter point system to keep obnoxious and disruptive children from playing.
Finally I would like to point out that one of the things I truly enjoy about gaming is the intergenerational and even intercultural interaction. I meet and play with many people both young and old I wouldn't otherwise have any interaction with.

Penny Arcade responds to our "hideous editorial," misses the point [update 1]

With all due respect sir, your grasp of economics is sophomoric at best. It is clear that you are no businessman. Being that I myself am not an authority on economics either I took your two posts to a professor of mine. A woman who holds both an MBA from Harvard and a doctorate of economics from Yale. She told me that your arguments are like applying a tantric sex concept to soccer. I'm not entirely clear on the metaphor but I took it to be bad.

Doctor: 40% of World of Warcraft players addicted

Aug 9th 2006 2:16PM (Joystiq)
I've purposefully avoided it. In high school I was highly addicted to a text mud and my grades suffered for it. Knowing that I have an addicted personality and that I'm a law student who can't afford that sort of time suck I've avoided it. And yes, I do think there should be a warning just so people who are prone to that sort of addiction know what to expect.
