@betabit That's what I was going to say. ;)

Apple's iPhone 4 promo videos show Retina Display and video calling

Watch the "fuzzy" pixels disappear on the right-side when they zoom out as if it's just that much better. Sneaky.

Apple patent application hints at solar-powered iPhone

Jun 7th 2010 1:09AM (Engadget)
Ugh. The patent does not mean that they might be integrated into the "touchscreen," it indicates that they might be integrated in OTHER touch-sensitive areas. Remember the patent for a touch-sensitive back/bezel/chassis? Yeah. Otherwise this would be a "clear solar panel glass panel breakthrough!" patent. Duh. This is the same major goof ModMyi made in their reporting of it.

Poll: What's the next iPhone going to be called?

Jun 6th 2010 9:28PM (Engadget)
@cookgoose Exactly why you SHOULD NOT call it "iPhone 4G." 3G was not the 3rd-gen. All the previous news stories should have called it "4G iPhone" if they INSISTED on using "4G" or "4th Gen iPhone" otherwise.

SanDisk works it harder, unveils G4 and P4 solid state drives

Jun 5th 2010 6:26PM (Engadget)
@Narg These aren't talking about speed. They are for endurance and high-life applications. For example: Look at the form factor. Find a netbook with a similar drive. Check the specs. For example, the original Acer Aspire one has either a Samsung or an Intel SSD that it about one half of a 1.8" HDD. It's a similar PCB to the SATA one pictured above except that the interface is PATA ZIF. rather than explain just how painful it is to use Windows XP on it, let me just quote Wikipedia:

Solid state drives

"Early 8 GB models come with the Intel Z-P230, model SSDPAMM0008G1. This SSD has been criticized for its slow read and write speed. Intel lists the drive's maximum speeds as 38 MB/s read and 10 MB/s write.[28] Later models come with the slightly faster Samsung P-SSD 1800."

The lack of any kind of cache memory means that it is WAY slower than any HDD due to constant hitches and freezes and the OS performs writes in the background.

Sony demonstrates eye-tracking glasses designed for 'lifelogging'

Jun 5th 2010 3:24AM (Engadget)
@kizuna I did. Why do you think I asked if it was a joke? There is no "eye tracking" in the module and, like *I* said (not the article), the rest would all be PC-side software.

It even *looks* like a joke... as if it were just taped onto a glasses frame. It's USB, so engadget's power source comment only makes sense for a true feature-complete prototype.

IOW, if it's real, the "visualization" is doing more harm than good... not something Sony, an image-conscious company, is used to doing.
