Kid Icarus: Uprising prototype began on Wii and PC
Mar 30th 2012 1:35PM (Joystiq)Well, developing a version of the game for the PC audience actually does require a bit of work. It doesn't really require a lot of work, but it's still money that you're spending to optimize for the platform. Ever try running a Gamecube game on your PC through the Dolphin emulator? Even high-end machines still have trouble playing them because the games are optimized to take full advantage of the Gamecube's hardware, and don't take into consideration the amount of RAM or processing power the Windows operating system or other background programs (like virus scanners, etc.) could be taking up. In the process of porting over to PC, you have to optimize your game to run efficiently on PC hardware as opposed to the one specific processor or GPU that's in the PS3 or 360.
Also, the process of porting something over to PC also involves making tooltip icons that are relevant to keyboard/mouse controls, adding an "Exit" button, adding keyboard/mouse controls, re-recording voice acting so that the actors say "Press the S key to do this" instead of "Press the A button to do this", and so on.
Now, with that said, I have played a good number of PC ports that ignore everything I stated above. Metal Gear Solid Integral still says "CALL: Press Select" when you get codec calls, the recent Top Gun only had Xbox 360 controller support, Sonic Generations shows Xbox 360 controls regardless of whether you're on keyboard or 360 controller.
In the end, sometimes I'm glad that some games don't get a PC port. Nothing pisses me off more than getting instructions to press a button that doesn't exist on my current hardware.
The life of a Sim in SimCity
Mar 28th 2012 4:31PM (Joystiq)4 is pretty accessible in my opinion. If you get deep down in bad financial trouble or your mayor rating plummets you can do some of the driving missions to temporarily remedy it if you have the expansion pack.
SimCity requires internet connection to play, will be sold outside of Origin
Mar 28th 2012 11:19AM (Joystiq)If enough people bitch about it, the developer and/or publisher might hopefully realize that there is a potential risk for losing a bunch of sales and re-work the way their DRM (which, to the best of my knowledge, has never effectively prevented piracy in any game) works.

Mar 28th 2012 11:13AM (Joystiq)It's like every game on Origin that's an "Origin Exclusive". I can buy Battlefield 3 in the store, or on Impulse, but I still have to play it through Origin.

Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion confirmed for 3DS by Nintendo Power
Mar 24th 2012 6:08PM (Joystiq)I've been subscribed to them since 2005 and I've gotten an issue every month since then..
Also, they are now owned by Future Publishing. Personally, I think it's gotten a lot better since then, their reviews are a lot less biased towards Nintendo games now.

Mar 20th 2012 10:06PM (Joystiq)I participated in the Global Game Jam a few months ago with some friends (because my college is a hosting site for it) and had a blast. Too bad this event isn't as widespread (or just online), as I'd love to participate. There are some incredibly unique ideas from this guy.
