First off, if youre not looking to be invovled in a game's story in the first place then you shouldnt be raising the question if it needs one.

Secondly, the gameplay in Final Fantasy 13-2 compliments the story on a closer level, if you actually paid attention youd realise that even the random encounters have meaning.

As for the western rpg to japanese rpg cliches and stereotypes, i personally am much more invovled and invested in a japanese rpg story then your typical western rpg. Comparitly the genre scope japanese rpgs vastly outweighs that of cliche tolkien fantasy storylines.

When was the last time you played a western rpg about time travel or persuing your true self or even a game around the current state of the gameindustry?

Seriously, if you cant be interested in stories like these then maybe youre not looking for a rpg, your looking for a MMO something you can sink your teeth into for as little or as much as youd like.

Do japanese rpgs need a good story?

I kind of expected that from the moment i heard this game was going co-op. I could tell they were converting Lost Planet 2 into the Monster Hunter scheme.

I wouldnt be surpised if they treat DLC like they do with monster hunter... which isnt a bad thing i guess.
