Apple's iPhone lockdown: apps must be written in one of three languages, Adobe in the hurt locker

Apr 9th 2010 12:34AM (Engadget)
I'm kind of mad I still can't write anything for iPhones or iPads with Ruby or Python.

I feel like they would definitely have a performance concern with interpreted languages, but... their syntax is just so sexy.

LGJ: Come As Your Avatar, Smells Like Lawsuit? Nevermind

I wouldn't really mind playing other guitar-based songs with Jimi though; he's pretty famous for, among other things, just being really goddamn good at guitar.

I think Cobain was, in general, more vocal about his distaste for various things, where Hendrix was not well known for vitriol. Where Kurt was against anything he thought, for lack of a better term, "phony," he was also publicly opposed to Nirvana's ideas and images being used in ways he thought were wrong (perhaps this is an extreme, but people raping a woman while singing "Polly" purportedly got to him)

Honestly... I think the fault may be with Courtney Love, who seems to use the rights to Nirvana's catalogue more freely than some would like (though it does not seem out of character, and ironically the perverted way in which Nirvana is now used in media, along with Nirvana fans' anger, is almost appropriate); I myself was a bit disappointed when "Breed" was in "Shoot 'em Up," despite liking both the movie and the song. I certainly did not like hearing it in a baseball game commercial.

How would you change the netbook as we know it?

Sep 13th 2009 5:05PM (Engadget)
@soul

I think he's right; Intel seem to be the bigger culprits in hardware limitations on netbooks, since their pricing scheme so heavily promotes using a single core atom with intel integrated graphics

Microsoft seem to be making a bit of a transition in how they deal with netbooks, because it's becoming harder for them to restrict them and Windows 7 runs pretty well on netbooks, so they perhaps have less of a need for their XP pricing schemes

I think there are more netbooks being subsidized, too? That's kind of changing how everything is working now

@Tokenekie:

I think he's more close to the term "smartbook" as we will soon know it

I think video playback is actually sort of nice on a net/smart/tiny-laptop book, if only for flash video and smoother performance with higher resolution screens, but I agree with you in that their strengths are their high battery life and focus on internet capability

that said, I coded a java assignment on one and it wasn't a bad experience; with high-enough resolution and large enough keyboards, they make great companions for any sort of text editing, including low-performance programming

Hands-on: Heavy Rain introduces Scott Shelby

I agree that maybe interactive movie isn't a great way to describe it, but I don't think it's an interactive movie in the same way as other games. Regular controls don't present you with orders or indicators of what to do on screen, which is I think the tradeoff they make for not being as generally applicable to dramatic story sequences in games. On the flip side, other games do not give you a chance to alter the flow of the story like Heavy Rain purportedly does

It is not an interactive movie in the way other games are, and that idea is what makes it unique.

whoa, Wiizer, ease off kiddo, technically "tales of monkey island" IS all new; he's talking about the episodic sequel to the original

he's technically right (technically)

I don't think games these days are generally interactive movies; games with a focus on lots and lots of "active" gameplay seem less based on plot and more on pressing buttons and killing bad guys. When I think of "interactive movie" I think of watching a movie with an opportunity to significantly change the plot or events of the movie, which would make it seem more like an interactive movie than a movie-like-game

That being said, I'm definitely willing to spend $60 on this game; while it doesn't necessarily look "fun," it certainly looks rewarding
