The Beatles: Rock Band execs say Yoko Ono 'gave the designers hell' [update]
Aug 16th 2009 1:49AM (Joystiq)She saw something she thought was wrong, and she didn't sugarcoat it. Perhaps it seems, from the story, that she should have tried to bridge the gap and understand the technology a bit better, but sometimes having all kinds of input is alot more helpful than being defensive (which it doesn't seem the developers were, instead trying to communicate that she was being too vague about some issues)
I think harmonix are big boys, and though it might not be remotely pleasant to deal with her, it all goes towards making a better gaming experience

Aug 11th 2009 11:10PM (Joystiq)Deering: Blockbuster games need to cost £70 to support industry
Jul 31st 2009 3:30AM (Joystiq)I know he probably knows (or better know) that no one would be willing to pay so much for single copies of video games (mmos excluded, which raise other issues), or that they, at least, should know better. Seriously, shit isn't THAT inflated, and if your games are costing that much, there are some logistic issues you probably should fix, especially if an earlier article on joystiq, which stated that many programmers or other employees pull consistent overtime for video games, is to be believed.
The best comparison for these should probably be movies, correct? The game industry has grown to a level where I think the movie industry may be the closest for comparison. Where do movies make back their revenue? I suppose for them there are a wealth of differences, like a more universal audience, sometimes shorter development times, I believe smaller teams, two waves of sales from theaters and physical media, licensing from syndication(?) and now internet T.V., and commercial tie-in stuff, like toys and merch (although I suppose commercial tie-in is usually a term used for things like will smith's face on the side of a slurpee).
So the article is probably right in saying that perhaps the industry producing our games has not grown a large enough infrastructure, and certainly not as long-lived as film, but that time does not seem not so far off that gaming companies cannot expand their horizons to better accomodate their development costs.
Does anyone else worry that perhaps this is a bad sign for the predicted "gaming rennaissance"? Or could it be a good sign? I feel like a famous designer somewhere, possibly miyamoto, once said that having constraints can force designers to be more inventive with their games; I would certainly like to see where these companies would turn to innovate when their budgets are set with harder caps. It might've just been another article here, or on kotaku.

Jun 29th 2009 6:13PM (Joystiq)It's nice to not have to worry about battle.net itself when there are problems with connections, though I'm not really sure how game hosting works with battle.net, and clearly not with how they'll be hosted with the new battle.net
LAN support not included in StarCraft II
Jun 29th 2009 5:58PM (Joystiq)I seem to recall having more control over things when hosting through LAN, but I could be wrong. I know it's kind of nice, conceptually, to not have to go through a nebulous hub service to play with people in the same room
