I have known a couple compulsive liars in my time. One thing that is common to lie about is military service for some sort of elite or covert agency. I think they do this for a few reasons. It is almost impossible for regular people to verify. It is very believable to most people who have ever seen an espionage movie. The chances of actually meeting someone who was really involved with the organization they claim are very very low.
