Japanese hardware sales, 4 Dec - 10 Dec: dearly departed edition
Dec 16th 2006 10:36AM (Joystiq)DS retails for $129 but on ebay they're going for 50% markup or more. Sells out completely on Amazon regularly.
PSP retails for $199 and pretty much sells for that much on ebay. Supply is everywhere.
Look on ebay for DS lite & PSP completed auctions. Whether PSP is a "failure" or not is a tough call. It is certainly a "disappointment" for Sony. Sony probably lost money on PSP overall.
Think about it:
1) Massive marketing & development costs for PSP.
2) PSP was sold at a massive loss initially to get market share. Probably sold at profit now, but only small one. LCD price came down, but that damn UMD drive is sold by nobody else.
3) Sony was supposed to make it's money back on the PSP platform through selling UMD movies and games. They were basically pushing the UMD format with the PSP (just like they push blu-ray with PS3)...
But UMD is dead. Most studios don't put many or any movies out in UMD. Major retailers have dropped their UMD seciont. Even Sony refuses to put out half their movies in UMD.
In terms of games, nobody sells huge numbers of PSP games. Nothing like the DS.
PSP is exactly what I predicted that crap to be: a REALLY, REALLY pretty and oversized screen that's highly scratchable and has mediocre battery life. And that's exactly how many people are using the PSP: As a DAP and DVP... burning MP3s. Which means that Sony doesn't get back any of the money (through UMD movie or game sales) it loses on it.
